Texas offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert addressed the media during a brief press conference on Tuesday. Gilbert spoke for around 10 minutes, and here are the highlights from his availability:
- I asked Gilbert about the second half struggles – from a point total perspective – and this was his explanation: “Just got to continue to execute. That’s the thing we go back and evaluate, and we identify. It’s really just a lack of execution. Just missing some things here and there schematically, either up front, or in our pass scheme. Those are things we’ve identified. Those are things we have already focused on, and we addressed with our guys, and they understand. It’s something that we’re encouraged about, we’re motivated about … to get better.”
- When asked about game planning to specific receivers, Gilbert said he feels strongly about distributing the ball to their playmakers.
- Gilbert said quarterback Shane Buechele has handled the pressure very well for a young player. He said people have to remember Buechele is still a true freshman. However, Gilbert said Buechele has done a really good job and continues to grow and stay focused.
- Here is Gilbert’s take on participating in his first Texas-OU game: “It’s exciting. When you get here and talk to former players and former coaches, and guys that are currently here, our players and coaches, they share a lot of the experiences, what the expectations are, and what the environment (is) on Saturday. Growing up in Texas, and (being) a (former) Texas high school football coach, I’ve never been fortunate enough to go to the game. Saturday will be my first Red River Shootout, and I’m excited about the Texas-OU game.”
- Gilbert was asked about Burt’s lack of production after week one, and said his receiver was battling a hand injury after the win against Notre Dame. Burt is improving, but Gilbert said that is the reason why his receiver has not been as productive.
- Gilbert had plenty of positive things to say about receiver Jerrod Heard. As skilled as Heard is, Gilbert said Heard is playing against guys who have been playing the same position for a long time. The biggest thing they want see from Heard is growth.
- Here was Gilbert’s response when asked about his task if the defense gives up 50 points a game: “It’s black and white. If they give up 50, we need to score 51. That’s our attitude, and that’s our mentality.”
- Gilbert said Kyle Porter and Tristian Houston will play behind D’Onta Foreman. He expects Houston to receive playing time. In addition, Gilbert said he still has the 18-wheeler package.
- Gilbert on not throwing into the middle of the field: "Just some reads. Again, with our scheme, and what we want to, there's things that we can get all over the field if we need to. That's just something that hasn't been in our game plan as of right now."
