When Temple defensive end Taquon Graham made his way to Austin last weekend for the Longhorns' annual Under the Lights camp, there were some Longhorn fans who were hoping Graham may leave town as a UT commitment.
That commitment didn't happen, but the Longhorns once again made a strong impression on the three-star defensive end. Graham has been on the UT campus numerous times and said there's a lot to like about the Texas program overall.
Key quote: "What I like so much about Texas, it's 45 minutes away from home. I like the coaches very well. Them being so close, my brother and my mom could see me," Graham said. "Even now my baby niece could come see my games. It's just so convenient for them to come see my games."
Slowing things down: Graham had been considering making a commitment in the spring, during Temple's spring football game. However, he pushed that decision back and no longer has a timetable for when he'd like to commit. When he does eventually decide on a school, he wants to make sure he has no doubts.
"I'm taking a step back. I want to make sure I'm making the right decision," Graham said. "My mom doesn't believe in decommitting. I don't believe in it either. There's nothing wrong with it, it's just something I don't want to do. I want to be really sure about making that decision."
Official visits: Graham has not yet locked in any visits for the fall, but he does know of a few schools that will get official visits. Texas is in that group.
"Of course I'm taking it here, I'll take one to Oklahoma. I'll probably take on the west coast, like USC or something," Graham said.
Other recruits putting in work: At the Under the Lights camp, Graham spent most of the night hanging out with current Longhorn commitments Kobe Boyce, Sam Ehlinger and Montrell Estell. Those three players, particularly Ehlinger, all gave Graham their best recruiting pitch.
"They're always working. They're always grinding, telling me how they love the place, love the environment, love the players that are coming are already in," Graham said.
Graham's former Temple teammate, Davion Curtis, is a couple months into his Texas career. Curtis, a freshman wide receiver for the Longhorns, is another player recruiting Graham to Texas. Curtis has delivered some other updates to Graham about his first couple months on campus.
"It's hard. Really hard," Graham said of Curtis' message. "They work you really hard."
