After being forced to part ways with defensive backs coach Chris Vaughn Thursday, Texas head coach Charlie Strong wasted no time finding a replacement.

Horns247 has learned that Purdue defensive backs coach Taver Johnson is expected to leave his post with the Boilermakers to take the same position in Austin. .

Johnson has spent most of his career in the Big Ten region, but he is no stranger to being around some of the nation’s top programs. Johnson coached the last two seasons at Purdue, worked with defensive backs at Ohio State (2007-2011), served two stints at Miami (Ohio) (2000-2003 as defensive ends coach and 2005-06 as defensive coordinator) and was a graduate assistant at Notre Dame (1999). Johnson also spent the 2004 season as the special teams coordinator for the Cleveland Browns.

Johnson worked the 2012 and 2013 seasons at Arkansas. He was the interim head coach for the Razorbacks in the spring of 2012 before the program hired John L. Smith to replace Bobby Petrino.

As a recruiter Johnson’s biggest get as came during his final cycle with the Buckeyes when he served as the primary recruiter for Doran Grant, a fourth round draft choice by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2015. Johnson also coached 2008 Thorpe Award winner Malcolm Jenkins, a Pro Bowl cornerback with the Philadelphia Eagles, during his time at Ohio State.

Johnson was part of an Ohio State staff that led the program to four Big Ten titles and four BCS games during his time working under Jim Tressel. That run of major bowl appearances included the 2007 BCS title game and the 2009 Fiesta Bowl against Texas.

Vaughn, a member of Strong’s original staff at Texas, may have been implicated in the NCAA allegations recently levied against Ole Miss having served as the Rebels’ recruiting coordinator from 2008-11. Strong had this to say of not renewing Vaughn's contract in a statement Thursday evening: “circumstances have put us in a position that we are going to part ways."

Strong still has to hire an offensive assistant to replace Tommie Robinson, Texas’ former running backs coach who departed for USC last month. The recent staff turnover means Strong will enter the 2016 season having only defensive coordinator Vance Bedford and linebackers coach/recruiting coordinator Brian Jean-Mary left on the staff from his original group of assistant coaching hires.

He's inheriting a young and extremely talented secondary. Should be fun to watch them compete for several years to come!

He was involved with a number of future NFL DBs during his time at tOSU.

We really need to get the right fit so I hope Strong takes his time and gets it right. Most Head coaches have a list of guys I am sure. I think he will hire the right guy. Would like to get a guy who has had DBs going against wide open offenses.

Agree. Strong has burned through all of his coaching hire mulligans.

it seems strange to me that we'd have DB coach lined up so quickly yet the RB coach is still a ?

Son....I have given Strong as much rope as anyone on this board, but you will never hear that from me. We have spent the last 2 years loading the bus. Time to start driving it.
Can't say it any better than this right here. Perfect post.
