Baseball announces nation’s best signing class
The Longhorns' 14-member signing class is ranked No. 1 by Baseball America.
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Baseball and head coach David Pierce have announced the nation's No. 1 recruiting class, consisting of 14 student-athletes that signed National Letters of Intent on Wednesday. Baseball America, which has ranked the Longhorns' last two recruiting classes in the top 10, has tabbed the 2020 Texas signing class as the nation's best.
"The class of 2020 will be one of the best classes in the country. Their baseball talent is outstanding, but their character and integrity sets them apart for me," Pierce said. "They will represent the university, athletic department and UT Baseball with great character and integrity. I want to thank their support systems from their parents, high school coaches, teachers and their travel coaches and organizations for all their hard work in the development of these young men. Our staff is thankful to be entrusted to continue the development of each and every player. We are grateful and excited to have the opportunity to have this group of young men joining our program at The University of Texas."

The recruiting class consists of eight high school student-athletes from Texas, three from California, one from Arizona and one from Alabama. Additionally, one junior college transfer from Texas is part of the class.
The class features six right-handed pitchers, Jared Jones (Whittier, Calif./La Mirada HS), Jared Kelley (Refugio, Texas/Refugio HS), Aaron Nixon (McAllen, Texas/McAllen HS), Travis Sthele (San Antonio, Texas/Reagan HS), Reid Taylor (Woden, Texas/Woden HS) and Tanner Witt (Houston, Texas/Episcopal HS) – and three left-handed pitchers, Lucas Gordon (Los Angeles, Calif./Notre Dame HS), Caden Noah(Longview, Texas/Spring Hill HS) and Dalton Porter (Leander, Texas/Rouse HS). Among those pitchers, Gordon (first base), Jones (outfield), Nixon (infield), Porter (outfield) and Witt (infield) are two-way players.
The class consists of four infielders, Dylan Campbell (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit HS), Mitchell Daly (Madison, Ala./Bob Jones HS), Ivan Melendez (El Paso, Texas/Odessa Junior College) and Carson Tucker (Phoenix, Ariz./Mountain Pointe HS) – and one outfielder, Petey Halpin (San Mateo, Calif./Mira Costa HS).

Dylan Campbell | INF | R/R | 5-11 | 200 | Houston, Texas | Strake Jesuit
Personal: Son of Andrea Odom and Donovan Campbell…both parents were student-athletes at Texas Southern University…Andrea was a tennis player and Donovan played baseball…Donovan was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in 1988 and played four seasons in the Braves organization…has one brother, Justin, and a sister, Ayden.
High School: Lettered and started three years at shortstop for head coach Raul Garcia Rameau at Strake Jesuit…first team All-District in 2017, 2018 and 2019…ranked the No. 44 overall player in Texas and 12th-ranked shortstop in the state by Perfect Game…participated in Area Code Games in Long Beach, California…Also plays football and basketball, earning first team All-District honors and 2018 Newcomer of the Year in football.
I chose Texas because: "Texas is number one in baseball and I always knew it's where I wanted to play. I attended a week-long baseball camp on campus when I was very young and from then on, I knew I wanted to be a Longhorn."
Allen on Campbell: "Dylan is a physical and athletic middle infielder that is arguably one of the top hitters in the state of Texas. He has had a great high school career in both baseball and as a running back for Strake Jesuit High School. Dylan proved this summer in some high-profile events that he can hit with anyone in the country. We are excited to welcome Dylan and his family to the Forty Acres."
Pierce on Campbell: "Dylan is a very good athlete and a versatile player that can play infield and outfield. Dylan was considered one of the best running backs in the Greater Houston area where he thrived in Coach Klay Kubiak's system at Strake Jesuit High School. Dylan also performed very well in the 2019 Area Code Games in Long Beach, Ca. this past summer as an infielder and outfielder. We are excited to have Dylan as a part of our future."
Mitchell Daly | INF | R/R | 6-1 | 180 | Madison, Ala.| Bob Jones HS
Personal: Son of Edward and Cathy Daly…Edward is a Lieutenant General in the United States Army…Cathy played volleyball at Army West Point…has one sister, Nicole, a graduate of Yale University and a brother, Connor, who attends Auburn University.
High School: A three-year starter at shortstop for Bob Jones High School and head coach Jared Smith…a two-time All-State and All-Region selection in 2018 and 2019…last season batted .321 with 18 doubles, eight home runs, 33 RBI and 52 runs scored…ranked the No. 1 shortstop in Alabama by Perfect Game…Also a member of the football team.
I chose Texas because: "36 College World Series appearances, six National Championships, the best facilities and the best coaching staff in the country. This storied program speaks for itself and I want to be part of it. Horns up!"
Allen on Daly: "Mitch is the top ranked shortstop in Alabama, he is a kid that really wanted to be a part of the history of the storied program here at Texas. He turned down several SEC and ACC offers to be a Longhorn. He can run, has plus defensive actions and shows good power in his bat."
Pierce on Daly: "Mitch has good speed, an excellent glove and has shown power in his swing. He will be a great addition to the Longhorn Baseball team. We are excited to welcome Mitch to the Forty Acres."
Lucas Gordon | LHP/1B | L/L | 6-1 | 190 | Los Angeles, Calif. | Notre Dame High School
Personal: Son of Stephanie Gloria and Jeff Gordon.
High School: Three-year first baseman and left-handed pitcher for head coach Tom Dill at Notre Dame High School…named the 2019 Mission League MVP…posted a 5-1 record with a 1.39 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 45.1 innings pitched as a junior…also batted .366 with seven doubles and two triples…participated in the inaugural High School MLB All-Star game in Cleveland in 2019…made the 20-man roster for the 2019 18U National Team that won silver at the U-18 Baseball World Cup in Gijang, South Korea…member of the 2017 USA Baseball 15U National Team that was named co-champions of the COPABE Pan American 'AA' Championships.

Allen on Gordon: "Lucas was the starting pitcher in the 2019 World Cup Championship game this summer for the 18U USA National Team. That right there shows you what type of pitcher, but more importantly competitor he is. Lucas showcases a very good three-pitch mix with plus command. He is as polished as any pitcher in the entire 2020 class. We are very excited to welcome one of the best left-handed pitchers in the country to Austin."
Pierce on Gordon: "Lucas is a great pitcher. He knows how to execute pitches and knows how to compete. He is one on the best left-handed pitchers in the country and we are excited to have him join The University of Texas Baseball Program."
Petey Halpin | OF | L/R | 6-1 | 185 | San Mateo, Calif. | Mira Costa HS
Personal: Son of Peter and Julie Halpin…has one brother, James, who plays baseball at Point Loma Nazarene and a sister, Alana, who attends San Diego State University.
High School: Three-year letterman at St. Francis and now attends Mira Costa High School and plays for head coach Keith Ramsey…member of USA Baseball 15U National Team, the 16U National Team Development Program and 18U USA National Team Trials…also participated in the inaugural High School MLB All-Star game in Cleveland in 2019…ranked No. 63 nationally, No. 14 in California and the No. 3 outfielder in the state by Perfect Game…participated in Area Code Games in Long Beach, California…also played on the freshman football team.

Allen on Halpin: "Petey is one of the top outfielders in the country and proved that against great competition over the summer, after making the 40-man roster for the Team USA 18U National Team. He is very athletic, can really run and has a plus outfield arm. But his best tool is his hit tool, a top of the order type hitter that finds the barrel a lot. He will continue to develop physically and the power is on the way. He plays with a chip on his shoulder and just wants to win. We are excited to get one of the best outfielders in the country to join this recruiting class."
Pierce on Halpin: "Petey has played a lot of games in elite events, including with Team USA. He can flat hit and is a very good defender in center field. Petey will have a chance to compete in the outfield as soon as he arrives on the Forty Acres. We are excited to welcome Petey to Texas."

He pitches in the mid 90's and has touched 99 mph. Offensively he has huge power, can run and play both outfield and infield. Jared's best attribute is his desire to win and compete at the highest level."
Pierce on Jones: "Jared is heralded as one of the best right-handed pitchers in the 2020 class. He has a power arm and will also compete on the Forty Acres as a two-way player. The ball explodes off his bat and he is a very good outfielder. We are thrilled to welcome Jared to the Forty Acres."

Personal: Son of John and Liz Kelley…has one brother, Jordan…John was a right-handed pitcher at the University of Texas Brownsville in 1996.

Allen on Kelley: "Jared is ranked the No. 1 right-handed pitcher in the country and has proven that this summer while competing in several All-American games. A 2018 USA Baseball National Team member, he pitches in the mid to upper 90's and we have seen him touch 100 mph. He has a huge arm but also possesses one of the best changeups in the country. With his stuff and competitive makeup Jared is an instant impact pitcher."
Pierce on Kelley: "Jared is considered one of the best pitchers in the country and we are excited that he chose The University of Texas in his commitment. He is big and strong with a bulldog mentality on the mound. His stuff is electric and he commands the ball very well."
Ivan Melendez | INF | R/R | 6-3 | 225 | El Paso, Texas | Coronado HS | Odessa Junior College
Personal: Son of Julie and Raul Melendez…both parents are educators in the El Paso area…has two brothers, Zach and Ian.
Previous school: NJCAA All-American third baseman as a freshman in 2019 at Odessa Junior College…named first team All-Region and first team All-Conference…batted .411 with 17 home runs and 70 RBI last season…helped Odessa College to a 38-22 record and the semifinals of the Region V Tournament.
High School: First team All-State third baseman as a senior at Coronado High School for head coach Juan Orozco…named the 2017 district Offensive Most Valuable Player and the 2016 Newcomer of the Year…also a member of the football team.
I chose Texas because: "I chose Texas because it has been my life-long dream to become a Longhorn and always wanted to be a part of the tradition."
Allen on Melendez: "Ivan is just a natural hitter with huge raw power. He is big and strong and can play either corner infield position. A Juco All-American last year at Odessa Junior College, Ivan has proven he can be a huge presence in the middle of our order. We are excited to get Ivan to Austin next fall."
Pierce on Melendez: "Ivan is our only junior college commit and fills a role as a right-handed power bat. He can play both third base and first base. Ivan trains with former major leaguer and Texas alumni Omar Quintanilla in his hometown of El Paso. We are excited to have Ivan join the Longhorn family."
Aaron Nixon | INF/RHP | R/R | 6-1 | 200 | McAllen, Texas | McAllen HS
Personal: Son of Beau and Diane Nixon…has one sister, Haley.
High School: Three-year starter at shortstop and right-handed pitcher for head coach Eliseo Pompa at McAllen High School…named to the All-State team in 2018 and 2019…2019 district Most Valuable Player and 2018 Defensive Player of the year…participated in the inaugural High School MLB All-Star game in Cleveland in 2019…2019 USA Baseball 18U National Team Trials participant and 2018 USA Baseball 17U National Team Development Program…No. 4 ranked shortstop in Texas and the 14th-ranked player overall in Texas by Perfect Game…also a quarterback on the football team, named district Offensive Newcomer of the Year in 2018.

As a position player he can play all over the infield and has proven he can hit against high caliber arms. Another USA baseball 40-man roster invite and two-time All-State player, we are fired up to welcome him to our program."
Pierce on Nixon: "Aaron has been a two-way athlete his entire baseball career and will be given the same opportunity at Texas. He will compete in the infield and on the mound as a right-handed pitcher. Aaron is another player that has competed on a very elite level with Perfect Game, Area Code and USA Baseball. We are excited to have Aaron joining the Texas Baseball program."

Personal: Son of Tammy and Brandon Noah…has one brother, Colby…cousin Nick Clifton was an All-Conference baseball player at UT Tyler in 2010-11.
High School: Three-year letterwinner for head coach Keith Touchstone at Spring Hill High School…played outfield, first base and pitched…Honorable Mention All-State in 2019 and the Co-Pitcher of the Year…first-team all-district in 2018 and the All-East Texas Newcomer of the Year in 2017…finished 7-4 with a 1.70 ERA and 124 strikeouts in 78 innings pitched as a junior…ranked the No. 16 left-handed pitcher in Texas by Perfect Game.

Allen on Noah: "Caden is a kid that every time we got to see him pitch, he was striking out hitters at a high rate. He has a swing and miss breaking ball and has dominated at Spring Hill High School. He has grown up a Longhorn and we can't wait to see him in the burnt orange."
Pierce on Noah: "Caden will be a great addition as a left-handed pitcher. He spins the curveball and will continue to develop into a role. Caden is a player that bleeds burnt orange and will give us great depth. We are excited about Caden coming to the Forty Acres."

I chose Texas because: "Growing up in the Austin area, my family and I would go to as many UT events as possible from baseball, football and basketball so I bleed burnt orange. The traditions and campus environment are like no other in the country. I want to be part of a National Championship team, and I believe that UT has the capacity to achieve this multiple years."
Allen on Porter: "Dalton is another All-State selection from just north of Austin. Another two-way player in the class, but Dalton does it from the left side. A very athletic kid that can play all three outfield spots and pitches in the upper 80's from the left side. He competes at a high level and just wants to win."
Pierce on Porter: "We've truly watched Dalton grow up right before our eyes. He bleeds burnt orange and will be a great addition in the outfield and as a left-handed pitcher. Dalton has a great upside and a great skill set. He is a top 10 ranked outfielder in the state of Texas."
Travis Sthele | RHP | R/R | 6-0 | 195 | San Antonio, Texas | Reagan HS
Personal: Son of Chad and Janet Sthele…Chad was an All-Conference football player at Angelo State…has one brother, Jared, who is a student at The University of Texas.
High School: Three-year letterman and three-year starter as a shortstop and right-handed pitcher at Reagan High School for head coach Chans Chapman…helped lead his team to the 6A state finals in 2017 and 2018…named unanimous district Most Valuable Player in 2019…a 2019 first team Perfect Game Preseason Underclass All-American…No. 96 ranked player nationally by Prep Baseball Report and the No. 4 right-handed pitcher in Texas…participated in Area Code Games in Long Beach, California…also an All-District football player and first-team All-Area quarterback.

Allen on Sthele: "Travis has been the number one pitcher on a team that has played for the state championship two years in a row. He is a very good athlete and just continues to get better on the mound every time I see him. This summer he showed why he is ranked as one of the best pitchers in the country. He threw very well at the Area Code games and showed elite stuff out there. Travis is a winner and we can't wait to see him compete at Texas."
Pierce on Sthele: "Travis has strived as a two-sport athlete. As a quarterback, infielder and pitcher, Travis proves he has tremendous leadership skills and athleticism. He has competed in many elite events and dominated hitters in the Long Beach Area Code games the summer of 2019. He will be an early contributor on the Forty Acres."
Reid Taylor | RHP | L/R | 6-2 | 210 | Woden, Texas | Woden HS
Personal: Son of Brady and Sherri Taylor…Brady played baseball at Panola Junior College and Sam Houston State, where in 1996 he helped the team to the NCAA Austin Regional…has two sisters, Reese and Riley…uncle, Lance, played baseball at East Texas Baptist.
High School: Three-year letterman for head coach Casey McBryde at Woden High School…named an All-State third baseman in 2018…first team All-District in 2019 and the 2019 Pitcher of the Year…named the 2017 Newcomer of the Year…No. 11 ranked right-handed pitcher in Texas and No. 28 overall in the state by Perfect Game…also a first team All-District basketball player and four-year starter.
I chose Texas because: "…it is the mecca for college baseball and every sport. There are so many other schools that call us rivals."
Allen on Taylor: "Reid might have the best breaking ball in the state of Texas. He is a very good strike thrower and just misses bats. His stats look like video game numbers and we can't wait for him to showcase his abilities on the Forty Acres."
Pierce on Taylor: "Reid has great upside and will be a contributor at Texas early in his career. He is another multi-sport athlete that has thrived in competition. He caught our eye later in the recruiting process and I'm glad he did. We are excited to have Reid join our program at The University of Texas."
Carson Tucker | INF | R/R | 6-2 | 175 | Phoenix, Ariz. | Mountain Pointe HS
Personal: Son of John and Erin Tucker…has two brothers, Quinn and Cole…comes from an athletic family, John played baseball at Florida Southern College and in the St. Louis Cardinals organization…Erin was a multi-sport athlete at Arizona, a Track & Field All-American and US Olympic qualifier…Cole was a first round draft pick in 2014 and made his Major League Baseball debut for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2019.
High School: Three-year starter at shortstop for head coach Matt Denny at Mountain Pointe High School…named 2019 All-State, All-Region and All-Conference, as well as taking home a pair of All-Tournament honors…member of 2019 Prospect Development Pipeline USA Baseball roster…12U USA Baseball Team Gold medal in Taiwan and Silver medal in Mexico…No. 1 ranked shortstop in Arizona, No. 2 ranked player in the state and ranked No. 67 nationally by Prep Baseball Report…participated in Area Code Games in Long Beach, California.
I chose Texas because: "Obviously UT is one of the best schools in the country for both academics and athletics but while I was on my visit, I just felt this "pull" to the school and the baseball program overall. To be a Longhorn and wear the burnt orange, it just felt different. UT is the whole package for me as a student and baseball player."
Allen on Tucker: "Carson comes from a very athletic family and plays the game like he has been around it his whole life. He plays the game very easy and it comes very naturally to him. Another signee that was on the USA Baseball 40-man roster this summer, he proved why he is the number one ranked shortstop in Arizona and one of the best players in the country. We can't wait to see him suit up in the burnt orange."
Pierce on Tucker: "Carson is another out-of-state elite player in the 2020 class. He has played with USA Baseball and excelled in Long Beach, Ca. in the Area Code games. Carson comes from a very athletic family and loves the game of baseball. He has a chance to insert in the line-up very early in his career at Texas. Carson has great leadership qualities and will be a great fit in Austin."
Tanner Witt | INF/RHP | R/R | 6-5 | 200 | Houston, Texas | Episcopal HS
Personal: Son of Lori and Kevin Witt…comes from an athletic family, Kevin was a first round pick in the 1994 Major League Baseball draft and played for the Blue Jays, Padres, Tigers and Rays…current minor league hitting coach in the Miami Marlins organization…Lori played softball at Texas…Tanner will be a fourth generation Longhorn…has four siblings Preston, Skyler, Cullen and Ripken.

Allen on Witt: "Tanner is another kid that comes from a very athletic family and will be a fourth generation Longhorn. Tanner is a lot like Jared Jones, a super talented two-way player that will be an immediate impact type player as both an infielder and right-handed pitcher. Tanner has as much raw power as any high school kid in the country and has shown plus stuff on the mound this summer. The top ranked shortstop in Texas and one of the top ranked players in the country, also was on the 40-man roster for Team USA this summer."
Pierce on Witt: "Tanner has burnt orange in his genes and we are thrilled that he chose The University of Texas to play baseball. He is big and strong and will compete right away as a two-way player. He has had tremendous success in the game and has shown great leadership qualities on every team he has been a part of. We look forward to watching Tanner perform in the upcoming years."

The class features six right-handed pitchers, Jared Jones (Whittier, Calif./La Mirada HS), Jared Kelley (Refugio, Texas/Refugio HS), Aaron Nixon (McAllen, Texas/McAllen HS), Travis Sthele (San Antonio, Texas/Reagan HS), Reid Taylor (Woden, Texas/Woden HS) and Tanner Witt (Houston, Texas/Episcopal HS) – and three left-handed pitchers, Lucas Gordon (Los Angeles, Calif./Notre Dame HS), Caden Noah(Longview, Texas/Spring Hill HS) and Dalton Porter (Leander, Texas/Rouse HS). Pierce on Melendez: "Ivan is our only junior college commit and fills a role as a right-handed power bat. He can play both third base and first base. Ivan trains with former major leaguer and Texas alumni Omar Quintanilla in his hometown of El Paso. We are excited to have Ivan join the Longhorn family."
