Happy Opening Day to all those that celebrate!

Horns v. Tigers

The old Big 12 matchup is rekindled as the Horns travel to Columbia, Missouri aka CoMo for a weekend series against the bottom dwelling Tigers. Year one of Kerrick Jackson ended in a 9-21 record in SEC play and a 23-32 record overall. Year two isn’t trending much better as the Tigers have started conference 0-6 and are just 9-14 overall.

The Tigers have struggled mightily on the mound and have also had errors in the field as well. The offense has been able to hold its own, but there is still work to do there as they rank in the bottom half of the conference in batting average, both in and out of conference play. One area that the Tigers have been good at so far this season is base running. They are 40-47 on the season in stolen bases. When their offense gets going it is because the Tigers are able to get on base and take advantage via the steal.

Maybe the most glaring issue for the Tigers is not that they have struggled out of the gates, but it has been against the 115th ranked strength of schedule.

In their six conference loses, the Tigers have lost 4 of the 6 games by more than 4 runs, meaning they really were not that competitive. Their best conference game this season was the Saturday matchup against LSU in which they lost by a score of 7-6.

As mentioned above, the biggest issue facing the Tigers is their pitching. They have been prone to giving up a lot of runs early in games and the games in which they keep the opposing offense at bay, their bullpen falters.

This weekends matchup is a big mental test as the Horns are coming off a big confidence building series against #2 LSU and a run ruling of Sam Houston on Tuesday night.

On paper, this should be a straightforward series sweep for the Horns. Games are not played on paper though and the Horns will need to over come a few variables. One, Texas has not traditionally played well in Columbia, as evidenced by their 13-12 overall record there. Texas will also need to overcome complacency and the belief that they don’t have to give their everything. The environment will not be noisy, it will not be full of fans. Texas will need to generate their own electricity and play to their standard.

A great example of that is back in 2024 when Missouri started conference with a 1-8 record, only to sweep the #4 Florida Gators at home.

Lastly, one thing to look out for is weather this weekend as there are supposed to be significant thunderstorms on Sunday, which could force the Horns to play a Saturday double header.

Know the Standard. Accept the Standard. PLAY to the Standard!

Prediction:
  • I really struggle with this one. Sweeping on the road is not easy and as I noted earlier, winning in Columbia for Texas has been tough. Sweeping on the road in the SEC is tough. So I am going to go with a 2-1 record
    • On the season, I am 17-6 on the season with my predictions
