RECAP
Freshman RHP Jason Flores got the start for the Horns again tonight and despite hitting the second batter he faced, got back to back strikeouts to put up a zero on the board. Enjoy the sword below!
In the Bottom 1st, the Horns got things started from the first at-bat as lead off man 2B Ethan Mendoza hit a home run into the Texas bullpen in RF.
After a 1-2-3 Top 2nd from RHP Jason Flores, the Horns added to their lead as LF Easton Winfield hit a double down the RF line and then scored when C Rylan Galvan hit a no doubter to RF into the Texas bullpen to put the Horns up 3-0.
RHP Jason Flores hit the first batter he saw in the Top 3rd, but got some help from Galvan who gunned down the runner trying to steal 2B. Once against, Flores put up a zero on the board.
In the Bottom 3rd, Max Belyeu hit a single up the middle, extending his hit streak to 11 games in a row and then score when SS Jalin Flores hit a double to left center to make it 4-0 Horns.
In the Top 4th with the Horns holding a 4-0 lead things took a dramatic turn. RHP Jason Flores gave up a 1 out single and then got a pop up to kick things off. A fly ball to LF was misplayed by LF Easton Winfield, largely due to the win and what should have been the last out of the frame ended up allowing a runner to score and put a runner on 2B. RHP Flores then hit the next batter he faced forcing Coach Schlossnagle to go to the bullpen and bring in RHP Connor McCreery, the South Carolina transfer.
McCreery walked the first batter he faced, which loaded the bases, still with two outs. McCreery then walked the next batter, plating a run and making it 4-2 Horns, prompting yet another call to the bullpen, this time for RHP Grayson Saunier. RHP Saunier then walked the first batter he faced, plating yet another run to make it 4-3 Horns. Not done yet, the Islanders hit a single through the left side to plate two runs and take the lead 5-4.
In the Bottom 4th, without showing a ounce of trepidation of worry, the Horns offense went to work. 1B Kimble Schuessler, who has really struggled the past couple of games at the pate, led off with a walk. 3B Casey Borba then hit a double to left center putting runners on 2B and 3B with no outs. LF Easton Winfield hit a chopper to 1B, but it did the job in getting 1B Kimble Schuessler home from 3B, tying the game at 5-5.
C Rylan Galvan drew a four pitch walk, prompting the Islanders to go to the bullpen and bring in a new arm. Texas took the lead as 3B Casey Borba took of for 3B and slid in safely and then trotted home as the catcher threw wide of the bag making it 6-5 Horns and flipping the lineup over.
2B Ethan Mendoza then drew a walk, following by a walk by RF Max Belyeu to load the bases, still with just 1 out. SS Jalin Flores earned another RBI on the night as he drew a walk, making it 7-5 Horns, forcing yet another call to the bullpen by the Islanders.
DH Adrian Rodriguez hit a fielder's choice, which played Ethan Mendoza to make it 8-5 Horns with 2 outs and runners on 1B and 3B. In the end, it did not matter what base the runners were on as Will Gasparino launched one to right center for a 3 run home run to put the Horns up 11-5 over a shell shocked Islanders dugout.
In the Bottom 5th, the Horns tacked on another run as 3B Casey Borba crushed a hanging pitch to LF over the Islanders bullpen and into the street to make it 12-5 Horns.
In the 6th inning, both clubs failed to plate a runner, the first inning and only inning the entire game in which a team failed to score.
In the Top 7th, RHP Hudson Hamilton made his season debut and despite giving up a 1 out single, put up a zero on the board.
In the Bottom 7th, the Horns tacked on two more runs as LF Tommy Farmer hit a single up the middle, stole 2B and then scored when C Rylan Galvan crushed a big fly to right center to make it 14-5 Horns. That second home run by Galvan surprisingly was his first multi-home run night at Texas.
In the Top 8th, RHP Hudson Hamilton got a strikeout on the first batter and then turned things over to freshman LHP Bryce Navarre, who walked one batter, but got a deep fly ball and strikeout to put up a zero in his collegiate debut.
In the Bottom 8th, SS Jalin Flores led off the inning by hitting a double, his second of the game to left field. Flores advanced to 3B on a ground out by Jaquae Stewart. After Kimble Schuessler drew a walk with 2 outs and 3B Casey Borba was hit by a pitch, Tommy Farmer drew a walk, plating Jalin Flores and ending the game with a run rule walk-off.
BIG MOMENT
Having already retaken the lead in the Bottom 4th and plated four runs, Will Gasparino put the icing on the cake as he hit a 3 run big fly to right CF to put the Horns up 11-5 and capping a 7 run inning, the sixth time the Horns have done so this season.
INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE
Rylan Galvan started off the season a bit slow, but he has broken out over the past few games and tonight he got his first multi-home run night going 2-3.
His final line was 2-3, 3 Runs, 2 Hits, 4 RBIs, 2 HR, 1 BB, 1 SB - not too shabby and outshining his best buddy Jalin Flores who continues is hot streak at the plate
TAKEAWAYS
On a night when three top 25 teams went down the Horns did what they were supposed to do and took care of business. Yes, everyone would like to forget that the 4th inning ever happened for both sides, but Texas continues to stack wins and win the games they are supposed to which was a real challenge last season.
Don't forget, this Texas A&M Corpus team is one which came into Disch-Falk and beat the Horns last season.
The other nice thing about tonight was to see the continued progression offensively for a number of guys and to get some guys more ABs. The more looks and more opportunity to build depth and give guys opportunities will only benefit the Horns in the long run.
