- As with last Sunday, the Horns won, and they won big. While San Jac is one of the absolute best JUCO programs in the nation and have put numerous players onto D1 teams, this is not one of their finest teams. In fact, while Texas did a solid job at the plate, San Jac also had a lot of self inflicted wounds, walking 18 batters on the day. That said, Texas did collect 21 hits on the day, including 5 doubles, 1 triple and 2 HRs. The biggest take away from watching San Jac is that they have some power arms (multiple guys running up to 95), but their command is questionable at best.
- Two other positives that Texas can take away from the game today was 2 out production and they committed only 2 errors.
- One the day, Texas left 15 men on base and only struck out 12 times in 61 at-bats
- As a pitching staff, Texas gave up 9 hits, 1 run, 7 walks and struck out 19 over 14 IP. That is a very solid day at the office regardless of the competition. The encouraging aspects of the day was that even when mistakes were made, the Horns staff battled through, trusted the defense and go through unscathed.
- On the day, the Texas coaching staff utilized 7 pitchers and 20 players in the field.
- As has been very evident during the first two scrimmages this year, Texas is going to rely heavily on freshman Jared Thomas and Jalin Flores. While neither filled up the stat sheet today, both played significant innings and continue to display flashes of why they were both highly sought after.
- One concern with Powell at Catcher, who has started the past two is that he does a fine job of stopping the ball, but he isn't the best receiver. The same can be said of Rylan Galvan as well. Both are definitely works in progress, which will take some getting used to as Ardoin was excellent behind the plate.
Top Performers:
- Mitch Daly - has been very good all Fall and put that on display today, going 3-5, with 2 runs, 4 RBIs, 1 double, 1 BB and 2 Ks on the day. Daly had several very solid at-bats and showed solid range moving to his left to cover hits up the middle.
- Dylan Campbell - ho hum, another HR to straight away CF. No, he does not exhibit the raw power and strength of Ivan Melendez, but DC has an exceptional bat and is poised to have a huge year. Today, DC went 2-3, but scored 3 runs, 2 RBIs, 1 triple, 1 HR, 4 BB and 1 K.
- Peyton Powell - after going 0-5 during the first scrimmage, Powell displayed what he is capable at the plate. On the day, Powell went 3-6 scoring 2 runs, 1 RBI and 1 double.
- Zane Morehouse - after a solid showing during the first scrimmage, Morehouse was at his very best today. Zane pitched 3 innings, throwing 34 pitches (24 for strikes), striking out 4, while giving up 3 hours (1 double).
Pitching Notes:
- USC transfer Charlie Hurley - solid once again today, going 3 innings and giving up just 1 hit, walking 1 batter and striking out 5. On the day, Hurley threw 47 pitches (26 for strikes). Hurley commanded his sinker very well again, sitting 90-92 and looked to have slightly better feel for his secondary pitches. Hurley due to his length can get out of sync at times with his front end delivery which affects his command, but overall Charlie continues to be solid. I still want to see better command of his secondary pitches and need to see what he looks like when extended as he does not have a huge arsenal of pitches.
- Travis Sthele - a frustrating picture. Sthele has some great secondary pitches (83-86 hammers) with break that makes them nearly impossible to hit. His fastball, sitting at 92-94 pairs perfectly with those secondary pitches, but command and consistency continue to elude Travis. Overall, Sthele went 1.1 IP, giving up 1 hit, walking 3 and striking out 1. He threw 35 pitches (17 for strikes). The Texas coaching staff really need Sthele to gain that consistency as he is going to be looked upon to provide innings this coming season or face not pitching at all
- Max Grubbs - the freshman came in a tight spot (1 out and bases loaded) and while he did not dominate, the freshman battled and was able to induce an inning ending double play. Overall, Grubbs went 1.2 IP, giving up 1 hit, 1 BB and 2 K - 30 total pitches (18 strikes)
- Rice transfer David Shaw - the talent and arm is there. The arm slot makes it quite difficult to pick up and there appears to be good projection there, but Shaw must continue working on his command as he also is quite tall and with that 3/4, nearly 1/2 slot, his consistency can suffer at times. Overall, Shaw went 1 inning, giving up 1 hit, 1 BB, allowing the singular run on the day.
- Zane Morehouse - as mentioned, above, Morehouse in the first inning was outstanding with a 93-96mph fastball and an absolute hammer of a breaking ball. Zane did give up 3 hits overall, but also struck out 4 and did not walk any batter through 3 innings, throwing 34 pitches (24 strikes).
- Lebarron Johnson Jr (LBJ) - after a rough outing against Houston, LBJ showed up and displayed the form that everyone has talked about this Fall. LBJ started off by striking out the first three batters he faced in dominant fashion, utilizing a fastball that sat at 96mph and relying heavily on a splitter that sat 86-88mph. Overall, LBJ gave up 1 hit, walked 1 and struck out 4, throwing 39 total pitches (23 for strikes) through 2 innings. LBJ needs to continue to build on this outing and build upon it as the tools are there.
- Andre Duplantier - Once again, Dre came into the game and pitched the final 2 innings, giving up a lone hit and striking out 3. Dre has continued to look very impressive with a fastball that reached 92mph today and a hammer of a breaking ball that had great spin and break. While Dre still can work on his velo and throws the occasional looping breaker, he has looked very good this Fall so far and looks to play a very important role this coming season.
Other Notes:
- Texas hitting with 2-outs - .350 (7-20)
- Texas hitting with runners in scoring position - .345 (10-29)
- Texas hitting with bases loaded - .200 (1-5)
- Texas hitting v. LHP - .250 (1-4)
- Texas looks to utilize the hit and run and outright steal much more often this year than last. DC, EK, Brown and others have excellent speed and feel for when to go. Jared Thomas, Jalin Flores and Jayden Duplantier are others that will contribute, while fellow freshman Max Belyeu still has some work to do on the base paths.
- As mentioned above, impressively, Texas only gave up 1 extra base hit on the day
- Texas pitchers were very good in limiting San Jac to (4-24) with the lead off man on
Schedule:
- Texas will play the Orange/White series, aka Fall World Series Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Disch-Falk Field. Currently all games are slated to go at 6pm, but with the advent of the Texas game against Kansas State also being at 6pm, very likely the Saturday game will be changed.
