Most of our undefeated regular seasons have been in odd numbered years, meaning we have gone into College Station as we are now with national championship hopes.

In 1963 we needed a late drive to win 15-13 in muddy Kyle Field. At one point we lost a fumble, which would have ended the game. But the Aggie pulled a Reggie Bush and tried to lateral, giving it right back to us. We then nearly got picked off in the end zone, but the refs ruled the defender did not have possession. The guy in the trench coat behind the goal post with the bird’s eye view signaling no catch was none other than Bill Little.

In 1969 and 1977, we stomped them pretty easily, 49-12 and 57-28. The latter game cemented Earl’s Heisman.

In 1983 we were down 13-0 in the second quarter when Akers decided to insert rocket armed Rick McIvor at QB. He ended up throwing for 4 TDs and we won 45-13.

In 2005, however, VY was off all game and saw his Heisman chances evaporate as Reggie Bush went ill vs Fresno State and UCLA. This was an uncomfortably tight game where defense and special teams saved the day. In the third quarter Michael Griffin blocked a punt near the Aggie end zone that Cedric Griffin took in for a TD. Then in the 4th quarter Rod Wright caused a fumble in the red zone with the Aggies driving for a potential game tying score. We escaped with a 40-29 win, and the rest as they say is history.

2009 was a track meet with the Texas offense staying ahead in a 49-39 win. The most memorable play was Colt’s 65-yard TD run in the first half, what could have been his Heisman moment if the offense hadn’t been stuffed all game the next week vs Nebraska in the CCG.

So even though we are undefeated in these games, they have had their moments where we have had to dig down. Of course this will be a totally different animal with both teams having something to play for as well as the drama of the rivalry’s long-awaited renewal.

Buckle up for an emotionally charged 60 minutes. I could see something similar to our 20-10 win over Arky.
