Was the 18 wheeler package (which I loved) from Traylor or Norvell? Or maybe a combo of the two?

Anyway I do hope that we have something very similar this year in certain situations. If Swoopes is the guy running it I hope he learns to hold onto the ball better than last year. Some of his carries were very close to fumbles if not fumbles.

I really liked the running game last year overall and I was kind of wondering who was more responsible for it...Traylor, Norvell, or any other coach on offense....

I can't help but think Traylor has a lot to do with it. I wonder if Gilbert is open to using some of the things that were successful last year? I would think so.

Sooner or later of not already other teams are gonna get hip to the 18 wheeler package and they gonna defend the shit outa it...I admit it was good for what it did..

Hook'em

Lots of plays have been around from the beginning of football and are still used and effective. Heck entire offenses are being run that have been around for as long as all of us have been alive....see Georgia Tech and the option offense as one.

And I did say I hope they do something very similar in the Texas offense.

The nice thing about the 18 wheeler package is you can get power, iso, counter, and play action pass with the same look. The other thing is that you have a 6'5" 250 lb guy back there that is used to handing the football.

18 Wheeler package is very difficult to defend in the Big 12. Simply put, Big 12 teams don't recruit to defend a lineup like that because it's not been something they have had to worry about.

Belldozer and the kid from KState come to mind but I agree you don't see it every game but even the Belldozer started getting shutdown

You can run the jump pass out of that package.... A little trickeration never hurt anybody.

This.

As long as the O executes it well....it can be effective. That goes with damn near any O. Especially if the right scheme matched with talent is in place like the above stated.

Even more so if the OC calls the right variations out of it to expose the D. Gotta keep em on their feet. I feel like we were very conservative and predictable with it. So many times they banged in to a line when you wanted to see a wrinkle in it or the play action pass out of it.

It would have been a lot stronger if it had a wrinkle to it every once in a while. I really think it can be a strength for this Texas team. I know Gilbert will have his own offense and I think it will be a good one but I hope he uses this look, some at least.

I think it all comes down to options for Gilbert.

What I'm being told is his offensive mindset is very unlike that of Watson. Where Watson would have 4-5 plays he would run out of any given formation, Gilbert wants to be able to run twice as many. Let's face it, we don't call it the 18 wheeler formation for nothing. Everybody knows what's coming. But a play action waggle or bootleg misdirection to throw people off from time to time won't hurt. Remember early in Tebow's career he would just bull it into the endzone? Later they came up with the jump pass because everybody knew what was coming. If a supreme athlete like Tebow had to adjust, so will Swoopes.

How big is D'onta? How big is Chris?
D'onta is probably 245 and Chris around the same. Two BIG boys. I would hate to have to tackle them when they have a full head of steam going. Got to get to them BEFORE they get going. Two very good RB's.

Are they both 6'?

I really like both the backs since they have plenty of power and speed. When you see players bounce off Warren like rubber balls as a freshmen then I think you have something special for the future. It takes him a while get moving but like his dad once in the open field he is a train coming at you.

I do think we need to throw from the formation every once in a while to keep the safeties honest. I can't remember once when we threw out of the 18 wheeler last year.

I think there was a pass to Bluitt in the RRR for a TD on short yardage. But I do think we should pass more out of it. there were not many passes thrown at all from the 18 wheeler.

How many passes can we expect to see when we have a qb who can't throw?

I would not say that he can't throw. Maybe not like Colt but he can throw. Some act like he is worse than a middle school QB. The offense this year will be full of short passes to receivers who are then asked to make someone miss.

If you watched Baylor, they have long vertical routes with speed and longer passing routes than the dink and dump short routes that I think Gilbert would like to try to execute if we have a Qb that can complete them on a higher % bases than what we have seen in the past.

They do go deep but not as often as the short pass. I have to disagree with that. But I do like that they throw it over the top a lot. Which happens to be what Swoopes is best at. Although I don't think he will be the starter. It would not shock me if he is.

The problem is that Swoopes is not the most accurate passer and I hope he improves.
Cotton,

If we can't throw a freaking Y dump route or jump pass 15-20 feet, then we be fvcked. I can throw a freaking 16 pound shot put 20 feet and drop it in a 5 gallon bucket bro (left handed, in the dark, with my a$$ cheeks duct taped together).

Also late in the BU game on a crucial 4th down we converted

Don't even compare the Belldoozie crap to the 18 Wheeler package. Belldoozie was severely spanked by the Horns 3 years ago causing her to cry.

The Horns are going to run all over Enabler U. again this year with 2 Heisman RB's. Going to get ugly, period.

Wasn't De La Torre a fairly important piece of that 18-wheel package? I read Warren is now 255 pounds.

yeah....when the QB and the running back are as big or bigger than the LB's, I would guess the safetys are gonna hope the D line makes lots of stops.

.....And then this one time at bandcamp.........Thanks for the riveting analysis as always crazy sumbitch:D

Hell yes I agree. I think throwing out of it more often only puts more pressure on the defense.

Now that our line is a little better and with the running backs we have, the threat of a pass out of that formation really makes it an effective package.
