THE DEEP BALL
Nothing sets the tone in an offense like the deep ball. So, your Defense is filled with All Americans, go F--- yourself I’m throwing the deep ball. The previous passes were incompletions and interceptions, I’m throwing the deep ball. You’re in cover 3 zone, guess what, I’m throwing the deep ball.
It is said that the offense always has the advantage over the defense because the offence knows what the offense is going to attempt to do. This advantage is only true when the offense decides what they are going to attempt based on the decision to dictate their will on the defense.
If the offense sits back and decides its plan of action based on what the defense is showing them, the advantage is lost. The defense is now the one doing the dictating. I’m sorry but the thought of my opponent deciding what I’m going to do does not make sense to me!
The deep ball declares resistance to intimidation and a display of will. No matter the score, time or momentum of a game, the deep ball should be thrown once every offensive series at a minimum. If the offense is up by three scores or more in the latter part of a game, the backup quarterback should be the one throwing the deep ball.
Even if the deep ball is not being executed, it must not be abandoned, nothing works until it does. Show me a conservative offense and I will show you an intimidated team. I would rather see a pick six off a deep ball than off a bubble screen or a ten-yard slant.
If the game is lost because of the offensive’s inability to execute the deep ball, then let it be so. If the game is to be lost and or a head coach fired, let it be on his own accord on how he lost and not the opponent dictating to him how he will lose.
The next time you see the deep ball thrown, see it for what it is, a declaration.
