what in your mind is an acceptable first season for this staff?
I have the acceptable line right at 7 wins. Anything less than that I think is a red flag in terms of how long this version of the rebuild will actually take. But I think this team will actually win 8 with a shot at 9 if they can stay healthy and a few guys step up. In my mind anything more than 8 wins is a very good sign that Herman made the right hires on his staff and the prospects for the 2018 season look very good. Less than 7 wins means this is still a program with lots of holes and it would mean this staff didn't do a good job in year one.
Unacceptable less than 7 wins. That means Texas loses to some bad teams and that this program still has a long way to go. Questions would arise about Strong verses Herman. Recruits would for the most part still wonder if Texas is making real progress. Lots of questions still remain about the program.

Exceeding expectations 9 wins and to me it's clear this program is on the right track and the buy-in from the players and fans would be an easier sell. Recruiting would start to take off. National attention and in the conversation for relevant bowl game.
Far Exceeding expectations 10+ wins. while that seems like lala land Texas should have the talent advantage in all but two games on the schedule. That has rarely translated to winning everyone of those games but we saw what happened at Houston. While I don't expect anything close to a season like this it certainly means Texas is in the conversation for a Big 12 title is Tom Herman's first year and recruits would be banging on the door. While it's not impossible it certainly seems very unlikely given what we've seen on the field the last 7 years.
