…are the same keys that resulted in us winning last night:
1. Remain committed to running the football for all four quarters
2. Play bad-ass, suffocating defense
After all the discussion and arguing on the board last week about Quinn vs. Arch, the game was won due to Texas rushing for 243 yards while holding Aggy to 248 TOTAL yards.
It seems as though the final offensive drive against Kentucky (when Texas ran the ball 15 consecutive times for 86 yards and a touchdown) may have led to an epiphany for Sark (as well as for our OL and backs) that our offense actually is capable of imposing their will and marching the ball down the field on the ground. That mindset was clearly evident against Aggy, as we rushed the ball 47 times for 5.2 YPC.
We only gave up 285 total yards to Georgia in Austin, so the loss wasn’t on our defense. We lost that game because we turned the ball over four times, including two in the first half that resulted in Georgia having to go just 13 and 34 yards for touchdowns. All four turnovers came in the passing game (one INT by Quinn, two fumbles by Quinn on sacks, one fumble by Arch on as sack). Attempting 49 passes (like we did in Austin) is not the way. Georgia’s defensive front can obviously wreak havoc on a passing game, but they are vulnerable to the run (ranking 51st nationally in rushing YPG allowed).
In Atlanta, we need to pound the rock, take care of the football, and let our defense lead us to the SEC title in our first year in the league.
