As I continue to work towards rebuilding and updating the 20-year set of LSR archives, today we take a walk down memory lane with my 1999 Lone Star Recruiting Top 84.

Overall, it was a very strong group of players. Consider the following numbers:

1. DE/LB - Cory Redding
North Shore
Signed with Texas

Overall: The turning point for Mack Brown’s recruiting in the state of Texas occurred with the commitment of Redding, who was regarded as the nation’s No.1 defensive prospect in 1999. A two-time All-Big 12 standout in 2001 and 2001, Redding was a third-round selection in the 2003 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions and has played a total of 13 seasons (147 starts) in the NFL with the Lions, Seahawks, Ravens, Colts and Cardinals.

2. S –- Gerome Sapp
Houston Lamar
Signed with Notre Dame

Overall: A multi-year starter for the Irish, Sapp recorded 155 tackles and five interceptions in his college career. After his college career, Sapp was drafted in the 6th round of the 2004 NFL Draft and played a total of five seasons with three different teams.

3. DE –- Ty Warren
Bryan
Signed with Texas A&M

Overall: Warren was an All-Big 12 defender while at Texas A&M, but his ultimate legacy was created in the NFL as a critical piece of two Super Bowl championship teams. A first round selection by the Patriots in 2003, Warren earned first-team All-Pro honors and played a total of 10 seasons in the NFL, recording 374 tackles and 20.5 career sacks.

4. WR - Artie Ellis
Spring Westfield
Signed with Texas

Overall: One of the first early commitments in the Mack Brown era, Ellis never emerged as an impact player for the Longhorns and eventually left the program to join the military before his eligibility expired.

5. DB - Jason Frederick
Houston Cy Falls
Signed with Texas A&M

Overall: Frederick –left the A&M program after one season, transfered to Sam Houston State and never emerged as a player of relevance anywhere.

6. LB - Devon Davis
Austin McCallum
Signed with Tennessee

Overall: Davis transferred to TCU after a season in Knoxville and was a solid, but never a spectacular player at the collegiate level. Davis suffered an ankle/foot injury as a senior and he just never quite returned to the level that made him a national top 100 player coming out of his junior season.

7. RB –- Ivan Williams
Cleveland
Signed with Texas

Overall: Williams was a solid role player for the Longhorns in 2001 when he rushed for 519 yards and five touchdowns, as well as in 2002 when he emerged as a quality player in the passing game as a full-back, but he never emerged as a top-end player for a Texas roster that was stacked with talent.

8. CB –- Roderick Babers
Houston Lamar
Signed with Texas

Overall: An All-American and Thorpe Award Semifinalist in 2002, Babers ranks as one of the best defensive backs to come through the doors of a school that has a strong claim to the nickname DBU. Eventually, Babers was drafted in the fourth round of the 2003 Draft and played three seasons with five teams.

9. CB –- Kendrick Turner
Dallas Kimball
Signed with Texas

Overall: Turner showed a lot of raw ability at Texas in his first season, but couldn’’t crack the two-deep line-up, left the program for academic reasons and was never heard from again. From a talent standpoint, this was a guy with Sunday upside, but he never really tapped into it.

10. OL - Alfio Randall
Houston Yates
Signed with Texas

Overall: Randall eventually made it to Austin after a brief stay at Blinn Junior College and he never developed into anything more than a solid back-up player for the Longhorns.

11. RB –- Shaud Williams
Andrews
Signed with Texas Tech

Overall: Believe it or not, Williams transferred from Tech because he didn’t fir into Mike Leach’s offense and landed at Alabama, where he developed into a 1,300-yard back and one of the best offensive players in the SEC. Williams went undrafted in 2004, but made the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free agent and ended up making the team and playing there for four seasons. He might best be remembered for this.



12. QB –- Ell Roberson
Baytown Lee
Signed with Kansas State

Overall: After a slow start to his career, Roberson eventually became a two-year starter for the Wildcats and one of the most dangerous dual-threat quarterbacks in the country. Was the Big 12 Championship Game MVP in 2003.

13. DB - Dakarai Pearson
Dayton
Signed with Texas

Overall: A multi-year starter for the Longhorns at safety, Pearson led the Big 12 in interceptions in 2002 with six. Although he never played a down of pro football, Pearson was a very good college player.

14. RB –- Tyrone Richardson
Clarksville
Signed with Texas

2001 season – Attended Eastfield College last season after leaving the Longhorn program before the 2000 season..

Overall: Richardson resisted moving to another position at Texas and decided to transfer after failing to move up the Longhorn depth chart at running back. Attended Eastfield College in 2001 and eventually signed with Texas A&M University-Commerce, although he never became an impact player there.

15. WR –- Jamaar Taylor
Mission
Signed with Notre Dame

Overall – Taylor last one season in South Bend before transferring to Texas A&M, where he eventually became a solid and productive player for the Aggies. Was drafted in the sixth round of the 2004 Draft and played two seasons with the NY Giants before injuries derailed his career.

16. OL – - Greg Barnum
Killeen Ellison
Signed with Tennessee

2001 season – Started 11 games at defensive tackle for SFA and recorded 36 tackles and five tackles for loss.

Overall – Was being billed as an All-America candidate at center for Tennessee when he suddenly transferred in the spring of 2000 to SFA and moved to defensive tackle for two seasons before returning to the offensive line in his senior season.

17. OL –- Robbie Doane
Coppell
Signed with Texas

Overall: A solid, multi-year starter at tackle for the Longhorns, who wasn’t quite good enough for Sundays, but proved to be very solid on Saturdays in his career.

18. CB –- Sammy Davis
Humble
Signed with Texas A&M

Overall: Davis was a two-time All-Big 12 cornerback for the Aggies, who eventually emerged into a first round draft pick by the San Diego Chargers in 2003. Labeled a bust after a short three-year tenure with the Chargers, Davis played with a total of three teams over the course of five seasons in the NFL, recording three interceptions in 32 career starts.

19. OL –- Alan Reuber
Plano
Signed with Texas A&M

Overall: –Rueber never emerged as a player of significance with the Aggies because of a variety of injuries.

20. DB - Sterling Kazee
Irving MacArthur
Signed with Tennessee

Overall – Showed a lot of early promise at Tennessee, but was dismissed from the program for skipping classes before he ever could make an impact on the field and was never heard from again.

21. WR –- OJ McClintock
RR Westwood
Signed with Texas

Overall: Bounced around a number of different positions while at Texas befiore eventually becoming a back-up defensive end. After his playing career, McClintock earned roles in Friday Night Lights (movie) and Two for the Money.

22. DB - Derrick “Strait
Austin Lanier
Signed with Oklahoma

Overall: One of my all-time favorites and probably the best AISD player my eyes have ever laid eyes on. A unanimous All-American in 2003, Strait won the Thorpe and Nagurski Awards and was eventually selected by the NY Jets in the third round of the 2004 Draft. Started five games in the NFL before eventually losing his spot in the league.

23. TE –- Chad Stevens
Houston Cy Fair
Signed with Texas

Overall: –Stevens has bounced around from tight and fullback during his career and was never able to emerge as more than a situational blocker.

24. DE/LB –- Jerrod Penright
Aldine Eisenhower
Signed with Texas A&M

Overall: A two-time All-Big 12 selection who recorded more than 20 career sacks with the Aggies. Went undrafted by the NFL out of college and didn’t have a pro career, but make no mistake about it, he was a heck of a college player.

25. RB – Kenny Hayter
Houston Cy Falls
Signed with Texas

Overall: – Hayter’s main problem at Texas was holding onto the football and it ended up costing him any chance he had to become the starting tailback for the Horns. He eventually transferred to TCU and did not become an impact player for the Horned Frogs.

26. CB –- Rufus Brown
El Paso Austin
Signed with Florida State

Overall: Although he never emerged as a star for the Seminoles, Brown was a two-year starter as a junior and senior, while earning a national championship ring as a freshman. Went undrafted by the NFL in 2004, but signed with Washington as an undrafted free agent and lasted for two seasons before moving to the Arena League.

27. QB –- Colby Freeman
Brownwood
Signed with Texas A&M

Overall – Freeman never made an impact at A&M and transferred to Abilene Christian.

28. OL –- Derrick Dockery
Garland Lakeview
Signed with Texas

Overall: A three-uear starter at Texas and a consensus All-American in 2002, Dockery was one of the best offensive linemen in the Mack Brown Era. Drafted in the third round by Washington, Dockery played 11 seasons in the NFL, making 115 career starts.

29. Ath - Tory Mitchell
Big Spring
Signed with Miami

Overall – After bouncing around for a few years after originally signing with Miami, Mitchell signed with Texas Tech in 2002, but was never really heard from.

30. DT - Cedrick Hilliard
Arlington Lamar
Signed with Notre Dame

Overall: Emerged as a starter at nose-tackle during his senior year and was MVP of the 2003 Gator Bowl.

31. DT - Chad Pugh
Fort Worth Boswell
Signed with TCU

Overall – A three-year starter for the Horned Frogs, Pugh was a first-team All-Conference USA selection in 2002. On a side-note, Pugh was the last head-to-head recruiting win for TCU over Mack Brown for more than a decade.

32. CB –- Monti Collier
Dallas Carter
Signed with Texas

Overall – The Dallas Carter product has had a difficult time cracking the line-up in a very talented Texas secondary during his time at Texas and never made an impact in his career.

33. DB - BJ Ward
Dallas Kimball
Signed with Florida State

Overall - A multi-year starter for the Seminoles at safety, Ward also left FSU as one of the best special teams players in the history of the program. Went undrafted in the NFL Draft in 2004, but he made the Baltimore roster as a free agent and ended up playing three years in the league with Baltimore and Oakland.

34. DT –- Paul Broussard
La Porte
Signed with LSU

Overall: Earned All-America honors at Blinn JC during his sophomore season, but was murdered in Louisiana in 2001 before he could ever play with a major college program.

35. RB - Reggie Duncan
Killeen Ellison
Signed with Kansas

Overall: –Rushed for almost 800 yards and three touchdowns during his sophomore season and was a solid player for the program before transferring after his junior season.

36. LB - Damien West
Sugar Land Dulles
Signed with Texas A&M

Overall: West didn’t last long at Texas A&M and eventually transferred to Houston and became a starting middle linebacker for the Cougars.

37. DE –- Kevin Young
Duncanville
Signed with Tennessee

2001 season – Young played in four games in 2001 and left the team before ever making a real impact.

38. WR – Kendrick Starling
Marshall
Signed with Navarro JC

Overall: Went from Navarro to Marshall to San Jose State and eventually into the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Texans. After playing with Houston in 2004, he was on the practice squad for both Seattle and New Orleans in 2005.

39. LB - Josh Buhl
North Mesquite
Signed with Kansas State

Overall: A multi-year starter for Kansas State, who led the team in tackles in 2002.

40. RB –- Ryan Beard
Houston Cy Fair
Signed with Michigan

Overall: –Never made an impact with Michigan, transferred after the 2000 season and was never heard from again.

41. DB - Terrance Keil
Lufkin
Signed with Texas A&M

Overall: A two-time honorable mention All-Big 12 player, Keil was drafted in the second round of the 2003 NFL Draft by San Diego and lasted four seasons before off-field issues cost him his career. Died in a car crash in 2008.

42. DB - Tramaine Lacy
Brazoswood
Signed with JUCO

Overall: Pretty much disappeared as soon as his high school career ended. I’ve never been able to find a note on him playing anywhere in the last two decades.

43. Ath - Carl Crawford
Houston Davis
Signed with Nebraska

Overall – Crawford would have been a star at Nebraska, but he signed a MLB deal out of high school and is currently in his 15th year as an MLB player. Man, you should have seen this guy as a running quarterback.

44. LB –- Jared Morris
Brownwood
Signed with Texas A&M

Overall: Morris started for the Aggies in 2001, but was never more than just a pretty solid player. solid college player..

45. K –- Dan Walker
Austin Westlake
Signed with North Texas

Overall – Looked great in high school, but couldn’t make it as the Mean Green’s kicker. Yeah… I was dead wrong and had no business putting him in the top 50 and within arm’s reach of a four-star ranking.

46. DE –- Shannon Mitchell
Navasota
Signed with Texas A&M

Overall –- Played with Blinn JC out of high school, but was never able to connect with a major college program.

47. OL –- Tre Mathis
Garland
Signed with Syracuse

Overall: – Moved over to defense and spent a few seasons with the Cuse as a reserve, but transferred and was never heard from again.

48. CB - Marvin Jackson
Galveston Ball
Signed with Navarro JC

Overall: – A former JUCO AA, Jackson started his senior year with Arkansas.

49. WR – Tarron Brooks
Austin McCallum
Signed with Blinn JC

Overall: –Signed with Angelo State in February of 2001, but never played a down of college football that I’m aware of.

50. RB - Richards Whitaker
Jacksonville
Signed with Texas A&M

2001 season – After leading the team in rushing in 2000, injuries and the emergence of Derek Farmer eventually pushed him into a reserve role.

51. QB –- Nathan Chandler
Southlake Carroll
Signed with Texas Tech

2001 season – Earned California JUCO All-Conference honors after throwing for 2,455 yards and 26 touchdowns with 8 interceptions at Pasadena City College. Signed with Iowa out of JUCO and was a two-year starter for the Hawkeyes.

52. K –- Shane Hudnall
Tyler Lee
Signed with Texas

Overall: Believe it or not, Rivals ranked Hudnall as a five-star out of high school. He left Texas to pursue the chance to play wide receiver at TCU and never made a dent.

53. CB –- Michael Jolivette
North Shore
Signed with Arizona

Overall: A three-year starter for the Wildcats, Jolivette was one of the Pac-10’s top defensive backs during his college career, although he did not have a pro career.

54. RB- Kris Briggs
Carthage
Signed with SMU

Overall: – Briggs was the main man in the backfield for SMU in his first two seasons, but he lost his job and finished his career as a reserve.

55. Ath –- Terrance Calhoun
Austin Reagan
Signed with Kentucky

Overall: – Never contributed at Kentucky or anywhere else that I’m aware of.

56. QB –- Adam Hall
Austin Westlake
Signed with Texas

Overall – Transferred to SDSU after one season at Texas was a solid, multi-year starting quarterback for the Aztecs.

57. OL –- Rex Richards
Midland Lee
Signed with Texas Tech

Overall: One of the best linemen in the history of the Red Raiders program, Richards was a three-year starter and played one season in 2003 with the Indianapolis Colts.

58. Ath –- Derrick Cash
El Campo
Signed with Baylor

Overall: A multi-year starter for the Bears at safety, who ranks as one of the school’s all-time leaders in interception return yardage.

59. TE –- Marcus Tubbs
Desoto
Signed with Texas

Overall – When Tubbs signed with Texas, he was considered to be a tight end prospect. Instead, he’ turned into one of the nation’s top defensive tackles during his time at Texas and developed into a first-round pick in the NFL. He played four seasons in the NFL before injuries ended his playing days.

60. FB –- Tim Parker

Signed with JUCO

Overall: Never signed or landed anywhere that I’m aware of.

61. WR –- Chris Cunningham
Houston Westbury
Signed with SMU

Overall: A solid multi-year starter for the Mustangs, who lost his senior season to injury.

62. CB –- Eric Giddens
Tyler John Tyler
Signed with Baylor

Overall: –Giddens started several games for Baylor in 2000, but flammed out and was never heard from again.

63. CB –- Bobby Walker
Tyler Lee
Signed with JUCO

Overall – Was a junior college All-American during his sophomore season at Trinity Valley JC and signed with Kansas State in 2001. Never emerged as an impact player with the Wildcats.

64. DB –- Antonio Moore
Del Valle
Signed with Texas

Overall: Moore didn’t make an impact at Texas and transferred to SW Missouri State in 2000, but he didn’t last long there, either.

65. TE –- Fred Spiller
Aldine Nimitz
Signed with Texas A&M

Overall: –Never emerged as a player of note while in the A&M program.

66. WR - Jerel Myers
Houston Madison
Signed with LSU

Overall – Earned freshman All-America honors as a freshman with 64 catches, but he never really built on that first chapter of his career to become a great player. Signed with Buffalo in 2003 as an undrafted free agent and spent three seasons as a practice squad player for Buffalo and Washington.

67. LB - Torron Woolridge
Houston Lamar
Signed with Texas A&M

Overall: Never became a player of note for the Aggies during his career.

68. RB - Donnie Pinkerton
Schertz Clemons
Signed with Rice

Overall: – After spending several seasons at the bottom of the depth chart at running back, Pinkerton left the Rice program.

69. QB –- Kelon Luker
Stephenville
Signed with SMU

Overall: Luker saw some action at quarterback for the Mustangs, but never really emerged as a player of note.

70. LB- LaMarcus McDonald

Signed with TCU

Overall: A multi-year starter that was a second-team All-American as a senior and one of the top defenders in the history of the program. A true impact college player whose talent didn’t translate to the NFL.

71. WR –- Gerald Hanson
Jersey Village
Signed with Texas

Overall: Transferred to Houston after the 2000 season and didn’t make a real impact after that.

72. OL - Britt Lively
Silsbee
Signed with Texas A&M

Overall: –Never made a mark at A&M, but did become a multi-year starter at Abilene Christian.

73. RB - Tommicus Walker
Arlington Lamar
Signed with TCU

Overall: –Transferred from to Nebraska, but never played a down for the Huskers.

74. TE –- Kevin Ware
Klein
Signed with Washington

Overall: A two-year starter at Washington, who was undrafted by the NFL in 2003, but he made the Washington roster as a free agent and spent the next season in 2004 with San Francisco. Played in 16 career games and caught four passes.

75. Ath –- Brandon Everage
Granger
Signed with Oklahoma

Overall: An multi-year starter and an All-American at safety for the Sooners early in the Bob Stoops era, Everage never emerged as an NFL player. Passed away in 2001 in a drowning incident.

76. QB –- BJ Symons
Houston Cy Creek
Signed with Texas Tech

Overall: Started as a senior in 2003 and was an All-Big 12 player. Was drafted in the seventh round of the 2004 NFL Draft by Washington and spent a couple of seasons on NFL rosters.

77. WR –- Sparky Hamilton
Lufkin
Signed with Arkansas

Overall – Hamilton was a solid four-year player for the Razorbacks, but he was not a real player of note.

78. OL –- Kelvin Banks
Aldine
Signed with Houston

Overall – Spent a season with Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College and signed a letter of intent with Texas A&M Kingsville, but did not play for the Javelinas.

79. DE –- Kelvin Chassion
Houston Smiley
Signed with Baylor

Overall: – Had a strong freshman season with the Bears, but never really emerged as anything more than a role player.

80. DB –- Ellison Collins
Huntsville
Signed with Texas A&M

Overall: Collins never made an impact on the football field for the Aggies, but he did have some success as a member of the A&M track team.

81. DE - Lamont Anderson
Irving Nimitz
Signed with Texas Tech

Overall: Broke his ankle as a sophomore and never really became more than a solid role player for the Red Raiders.

82. Ath - Jomo Rose
Georgetown
Signed with Baylor

Overall: – Failed to meet academic requirements coming out of high school and I’m not sure if he ever played anywhere.

83. DT –- Josh Tubbs
Belton
Signed with Houston

Overall – Actually started at Houston before choosing to transfer to Southwest Texas State in 2001.

84. QB –- Casey Printers
DeSoto
Signed with TCU

Overall: Decided to transfer from TCU after the 2001 season and finished his career as a starter for Florida A&M. Spent a season with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2006, but for the better part of an eight-year period, he was a starter in the CFL.
