5/10/1909- Matriarch of Country Music’s Carter Family, Maybelle Carter is born in Virginia. Her fingerstyle guitar playing is still used to this day.

5/8/1911- Delta Blues master Robert Johnson is born outside of Jackson, Ms.

5/12/1928- Musical genius Burt Bacharach is born in Kansas City.


5/8/1940- Singer and TV star Ricky Nelson is born in NJ.


5/12/1940- Motown songwriter Norman Whitfield is born in Harlem. He wrote songs such as “Aint to proud to beg”, “I’m losing you”, I heard it through the grapevine”, "Can't get next to you”, "Just my imagination” and “Car Wash” to name just a few.

5/12/1955- Country musician Kix Brooks of the legendary Country duo Brooks & Dunn is born in Shreveport.

5/12/1963- Bob Dylan walks out during rehearsals for The Ed Sullivan Show after being told he could not perform “Talking John Birch” because it made light of segregation and mocked the U.S. Military.

5/11/1964- The Beach Boys release their single “Don’t worry baby”, arguably their finest recording.


5/12/1964- The Beach Boys also start a 4-week run on the U.S. album charts with “Beach Boys in Concert”, their 1st no. 1 album.

5/6/1965- While at a hotel in Clearwater, Fl., Mick Jagger and Keith Richards finalized the main guitar riff that would kick off one of the greatest songs ever made and launch The Rolling to superstardom…


James Brown records his smash single “I got you (I feel good)”.

5/8/1965- The Music Video is born when Bob Dylan makes a promotional film for his song “Subterranean Homesick Blues.” The actors in the video were his road manager along with Beat Poet and counter-culture figure Allen Ginsberg.


5/12/1965- Wilson Pickett releases this single off his 3rd album.


5/7/1966- The Mamas and The Papas start a 3-week run at no. 1 on the singles chart with “Monday, Monday”.


The Rolling Stones released their single “Paint it Black” off their album Aftermath.

5/11/1966- At Muscle Shoals’ FAME Studios with the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section and the Memphis Horns behind him, Wilson Pickett records his biggest hit, “Land of a Thousand Dances.”

5/12/1967- The Jimi Hendrix Experience release their debut album, “Are you Experienced?” Here’s their debut single…

5/6/1968- After getting clean, Johnny Cash releases his landmark live album “at Folsom Prison”, revitalizing his career.


5/9/1968- Merle Haggard records a song lamenting the pain he caused his mother during his troubled youth…
