8/12/1927- Country Music singer and showman Porter Wagoner is born in Missouri. Known as Mr. Grand Ole Opry, his TV show that aired in the 60’s thru the 70’s until 1981 launched Dolly Parton and many other acts.

8/12/1929- Buck Owens is born in Sherman, TX. The Country legend incorporated steel and electric guitars, fiddles, prominent drum tracks with no orchestration, the sound of honky-tonks not the predominant Nashville music. This became the Bakersfield sound that led to the Outlaw and progressive country movements that ruled country music in the 70s though the 80’s.


8/16/1938- Delta Blues legend Robert Johnson dies at 27. Was his death caused by poisoning or by the Devil collecting on Johnson’s Faustian pact with him that gave Robert his masterful Blues guitar talent?

8/16/1939- Famed Outlaw Country singer/songwriter Bill Joe Shaver is born in Corsicana.

8/14/1941- Musician and songwriter David Crosby, who ushered in the California sound of the counterculture 1960’s with The Byrds and Crosby Stills & Nash is born in LA.


8/14/1945- Renowned Banjo musician (and actor I suppose) Steve Martin is born in Waco.


8/14/1946- Larry Graham, famed bassist for Sly and the Family Stone is born in Beaumont. His nephew I some Canadian named Drake.


8/15/1946- Composer and singer/songwriter Jimmy Webb is born in OK just off Route 66. He is still the only artist to win a Grammy for music, lyrics and orchestration. His song credits include “MacArthur Park”, “Galveston”, Wichita Lineman”, “The Highwayman” and this this gem…


8/12/1949- Dire Straits guitarist and frontman Mark Knopfler is born in Scotland.


8/13/1951- Musician Dan Fogelberg is born in Illinois.


8/18/1952- Actor and singer Patrick Swayze is born in Houston. His song that he also wrote “She’s like the wind” reached no. 1 on the U.S charts and was a global hit.

8/13/1953- Renowned Austin musician Nanci Griffith is born in Seguin. She died on 8/13/2021 after her 68th Birthday.

8/12/1957- Texas born Johnny Mathis releases “Chances Are”, which would become his 1st U.S. no 1 single.

8/16/1958- Madonna Ciccone is born outside Saginaw. She has sold 300 million records worldwide and is the most successful solo artist in US Billboard chart history.


8/17/1958= Brenda Carlisle of the Go-Go’s is born in LA.

8/17/1959- Jazz trumpeter Miles Davis releases the very influential “Kind of Blue”, which is lauded by many as Jazz’s greatest record and one of the great albums in music history.


8/15/1960- Fresh off his stint in the Army, Elvis hits no. 1 on the U.S. singles charts with “It’s now or never.”


8/17/1960- The Beatles begin their 2-year Hamburg residency at various night clubs and strip bars. They would play sometimes 6-7 nights a week and the shows would last around 4 hours or more, honing their skills and playing until exhaustion. In West Germany is also where John, Paul and George met Ringo and became the foursome that would be famous.

8/16/1960- Famed electronic/alt-rock/synth producer and engineer Mark “Flood” Ellis is born in London.


8/12/1963- Anthony Ray is born outside Seattle. We know him as Sir Mix-a-lot.


8/13/1963- Bob Dylan releases his protest classic “Blowin in the wid.”


8/13/1964- The Supremes release what would become their 2nd of 5 consecutive records to hit o. 1 on the U.S. singles charts with “Baby Love”. Of course it’s produced by the team of Holland-Dozier-Holland, and also hit no. 1 in the UK.


This classic by Manfred Mann was the no. 1 single in both the ZU.S. and the UK.


8/14/1965- This song begins a month long stay at no. 1 on the U.S. singles charts.


8/13/1965- The Jefferson Airplane play their very 1st concert in San Fracisco.

8/15/1965- The Beatles play to a record concert crowd of 55, 600 fans at Shea Stadium. After the show, Bob Dylan meets them an the rest is history.


8/12/1966- The Beatles begin what would be their final U.S. tour in Chicago.

8/13/1966- John Sebastian and The Lovin Spoonful’s "Summer in the city” begins a 5-week stay at no. 1 on the U.S. singles charts.


The Beatles’ 7th album Revolver begins it 9-week run as the no. 1 album in the UK. The innovative and experimental production techniques used during its production changed the way we viewed albums as more than just a collection of recorded singles.


8/12/1967- Scott McKenzie’s “San Francisco (Be sure to wear flowers in your hair)”, written by John Phillips of the Mamas & The Papas, hits no. 1 on both the U.S. and UK charts.


8/16/1967- After playing a midnight show in Vegas, Louis Armstrong leaves for LA and records this renowned standard at United Recording Studios, home of Phil Spector and where Pet Sounds was recorded.


8/12/1968- The New Yardbirds have their 1st rehearsal in London. The band composed of Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, Robert Plant and John Bonham would rule the 1970’s Rock World.


8/17/1968- Big Brother & the Holding Company release their 2nd album and the final album with lead singer Janis Joplin before she went on to her solo career.


The Doors’ 3rd album in the 20-month span since their debut, “Waiting for the Sun”, begins a 6-week stay as the no. 1 in America.


The Rascals begin a 5-week run at no. 1 on the U.S. singles charts with “People got to be free”.
