9/24/1893- Lemon “Blind Lemon” Jefferson is born in the now abandoned ghost town of Coutchman, Texas. He is known today as the “Father of Texas Blues.”

9/29/1907- Country music pioneer and actor Gene Autry is born just outside Denison. A mainstay of radio, film and TV, his country songs first brought music to a national audience.

9/23/1926- John Coltrane, saxophonist and one of the most acclaimed jazz musicians, is born in NC.

9/28/1938- Soul singer Ben E. King, a soloist and member of the Drifters is born in NC. His time with the Drifters culminated in a U.S. no .1 single “Save the last dance for me” and is best know for this no. 1 and all-time classic…

9/23/1949- The Boss is born in New Jersey.


9/23/1941- Singer Julio Iglesias is born in Madrid. he is still the most sucessful Spanish and bestselling Latin music artist of all-time.


9/24/1941- Linda Eastman, Paul McCartny’s 1st wife and keyboardist/vocalist for Wings is born in NYC.

9/26/1945- Art Rock and New Wave pioneer Bryan Ferry is born in England.


9/27/1947- Meatloaf (Michael Aday) is born in Dallas.


9/26/1948- Olivia Newton-John is born in England. There may not have been a better combination of beauty, voice talent and looks than her.


9/24/1957- Elvis hits no.1 on the U.S. singles charts for the 9th time in 2-year span with “Jailhouse Rock.” It also hit the top of the charts in the UK.

9/29/1957- Buddy Holly & the Crickets release “Everyday”, it would reach no. 2 on both the Pop and R&B charts.

9/24/1958- The Donna Reed Show debuts on ABC, it runs for 7 years.


9/25/1960- Sam Cooke hits no. 1 on the U.S. charts of both the Pop and R&B simultaneously with “Chain Gang.”


9/27/1960- Smokey Robinson & The Miracles release “Shop Around” for Motown Records. Berry Gordy is the co-writer and the records producer. It was Motown’s 1st single to be released abroad, and the labels first R&B no. 1 single. It was not just the groups 1st million selling single, but also for Motown as well.


9/26/1964- George Jones cracks the U.S top 40 pop charts for the 1st and only time.


9/27/1964- The Beach Boys make their 1st appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show for the season premiere.


9/27/1966- Third Eye Blind frontman Stephen Jenkins is born in Palm Springs.

9/23/1967- Just 8 months after their debut album is released, The Doors release both “People Are Strange”, their lead single off their 2nd album and the album itself, Strange Days.

The Box Tops begin 7-week run as the no. single in America with “The Letter.”


9/25/1967- 20-year-old Dolly Parton makes her debut on The Porter Waggoner Show and performs two songs from her debut album. Soon after she joins the weekly show full-time for the next seven years while also releasing a dozen albums in that period.

9/29/1968- With the nation watching on the Ed Sullivan Show, The Supremes, known for their majestic dresses and romantic ballads, dress casually with Diana Ross wearing no shoes while dressed in tattered shorts and sweatshirt as they premiere their new song concerning the rapidly growing single parent household problem in Black America, “Love Child.” The single was their 11th U.S. no. 1 single and sold 2 million copies that year.
