2/13/1883- German classical composer and conductor Richard Wagner dies in Venice at 69 years old.


2/16/1935- Sonny Bono is born in Detroit. Before becoming a pop star with then wife Cher, he worked at multiple recording Studios before coming under famed producer Phil Spector tutelage. He and Cher had several variety shows together, even after their divorce. He then got into politics and served as the Mayor of Palm Springs and then becoming a U.S. congressman until his death in 1998.

2/10/1939- Film and TV show musical score extraordinaire Jerry Goldsmith is born in Pasadena. His work includes the films The man from U.N.C.L.E., Planet of the Apes, Patton, Chinatown, The Omen, Alien, Hoosiers and L.A. Confidential.




2/10/1937- Roberta Flack is born in NC. It doesn't get any better than this 1972 no. 1 Song of the Year. It had been a sleeper hit until Clint Eastwood included it in his directorial debut "Play Misty for me."


2/12/1939- Ray Manzarek, ace keyboardist fro The Doors, is born in Chicago.


2/11/1941-Famed Brazilian musician Sergio Mendes is born in Rio De Janeiro.


2/15/1941- Brian Holland is born in Detroit. He was an ace songwriter/producer and member of Holland-Dozier-Holland, the songwriting and production team for Motown Records between 1962 to 1967. This team produced 14 U.S. charts no. 1 songs, and 21 other U.S. top 20 hit songs.

2/13/1950- Singer/songwriter and genre crossing musician Peter Gabriel is born outside of London.


2/12/1952- Legendary singer/songwriter Michael McDonald is born in St. Louis.


2/16/1952- R&B singer/songwriter James Ingram is born in Akron.

2/13/1956- Peter Hook, bassist and co-founder of both Joy Division and New Order, is born in north England.


2/10/1958- Frank Sinatra’s album “Come fly with me” begins a 5-week stay at no. 1.

2/16/1958- Tracy “Ice-T: Marrow is born in NJ. He was orphaned at 13 and spent his teen years in LA. He had a brief stint in the Army and later was a member of armed robbery outfit and later a DJ. He became a trailblazing rapper on the West Coast and began acting the 90’s and has been a cast member of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit from 2000 to today.


2/13/1960- Frank Sinatra founds Reprise Records, which intended for recording artists to have more artistic freedom and to give them complete ownership of their recordings. The label, which Sinatra sold to Warner Bros. in 1963, is still active and has released works from Jimi Hendrix and The Beach Boys to Green Day and Michael Buble.

2/12/1961- The Miracles’ “Shop Around” becomes Motown Records 1st million -selling single. Its written by both Smokey Robinson and Motown’s founder Berry Gordy.


Alt/hardcore rocker stalwart Henry Rollins is born in D.C.


2/10/1962- Metallica original bassist Cliff Burton (pictured left) is born outside San Francsico.

2/11/1962- Sheryl Crow is born in Missouri.

This film socre album from Henry Mancini hits no. 1 on the U.S. album charts.


2/11/1964- Fresh off their arrival and performing on The Ed Sullivan Show, The Beatles play their 1st U.S. concert in D.C at the Washington Coliseum. Days later their Meet The Beatles album becomes their 1st U.S. charts no. 1 album.


They returned to The Ed Sullivan for a 2nd time on 2/16/1964, with a live broadcast from Miami’s Hotel Deauville. While there they met young heavyweight challenger Cassius Clay and posed for photos.

2/10/1965- Motown releases “Nowhere to run” by Matha & the Vandellas. My favorite Motown song.


2/14/1965- Legendary Jazz singer/pianist Nat King Cole dies at only 45 years old from complications following a procedure for his lung cancer. He was the 1st black host of an U.S. TV variety show and his King Cole Trio was thevery 1st radio program to be sponsored by black musicians. His “Christmas song” is still a holiday favorite to this day. In his career that was primarily from 1942 to 1965, he had 7 U.S. charts no. 1 songs, and an astounding 63 top 20 hit songs.


2/10/1967- The Rolling Stones release their 7th album in the U.S, Between The Buttons.


The Monkees 2nd album More Of The Monkees performs a feat still not achieved to this day, making the largest single week jump, going from no. 122 all the way to no.1 in a week. It would become the 1st Rock album to finish a year as the top selling album of that year.


Aretha Franklin release both “Do right woman...” and “I have never loved a man…” Both were recorded at Muscle Shoals’ FAME Studios.


2/11/1967- The Turtles release this classic song.


2/13/1967- The Beatles release these 2 singles after pressure from their label to build up anticipation for their spring release of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. These two songs would not be included on that album.
