RECAP

The Arlington woes continue. After securing the No.1 seed in the Big 12 tournament, Texas dropped the opener 6-3 to the No. 8 seed Kansas Jayhawks. This was the fourth loss in Arlington this year and the second game dropped to the Jayhawks. RHP Collin Baumgartner went 6 innings, allowing just one earned run for KU. This was the second time this year that Baumgartner out-pitched and got the win against Big 12 Pitcher of the Year Lucas Gordon.

The Horns tied the game at 2 with a flurry of two-out knocks from Dylan Campbell, Garret Guillemette, and Porter Brown, but the lead did not last for long. In the top of the 7th, Travis Sthele issued two walks (one intentional) and found himself in a bases-loaded jam with two outs. After missing badly with a 2-2 fastball, Sthele was forced to come over the plate with a 94 MPH fastball that Reeder promptly sent 414 feet to RF for the empathic grand slam that ended up being the difference in the game.

Some quick thoughts before some breakfast baseball tomorrow...

This team just does not get up for games in Arlington. I don’t understand it and have no explanation for it. It’s not the type of narrative I usually buy into, but it’s getting tough to dispute. The park always looks empty, sounds quiet, and hosts poor UT baseball efforts. The energy and sense of urgency that Texas often shows just does not travel with the team to Globe Life.

For the second time this year, Kansas looked comfortable in the box against Lucas Gordon while Texas looked anything but comfortable against Collin Baumgartner. Gordon did his best to keep Texas in the game without anything close to his best stuff. Gordon found himself behind in the count more often than usual and when he was ahead in the count, the putaway pitches just were not there. Kansas made Gordon throw 37 pitches in the third and never let him get in a rhythm.

Gordon: 5 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 5 K, 1 BB
Baumgartner: 6 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 5 K, 1 BB

At least Jack O’Dowd came ready to play. O’Dowd might be the least talked about player in the lineup this year, but he made sure that his presence was felt on Wednesday. O’Dowd led off the third with one of the best at-bats you will see. With a 3-2 count, O’Dowd fouled off seven straight pitches before launching a no-doubt homer to RF on the 15th pitch of the at-bat. Then in the 9th, O’Dowd hit a ball 422 feet for an opposite-field dinger. It was quite the day for the most under-the-radar player in the lineup.

Too many mistakes and missed opportunities. Jack O’Dowd failed to hold the tag on a runner at second, costing Texas an out. Jared Thomas made a poor read on a ball in the dirt and was thrown out on the bases. Texas was 0-2 in converting runs with a man on third and less than two outs. It was just not a clean game with solid execution for the Horns.

Travis Sthele was awesome besides one bad inning. But one bad inning can and often will be the difference this time of year.

The Horns’ live RPI is down to 27 as of my typing of this recap. It’s too early in the week to know how much help Texas is or isn’t getting from other teams that are on the hosting bubble. It looks like Texas needs one win to have a chance at hosting and two wins to be feeling somewhat decent on selection Monday.

Lucas Gordon is done for the week and Sthele is likely down until Sunday. DJ Burke and Heston Tole are not with the team this weekend for unknown reasons, and Peyton Powell left this game with a back injury. Not to mention that Tanner Carlson’s injury has left the team searching for a DH. This team was never known for its depth, and the roster suddenly feels thinner than ever.

Texas winning the next two is still realistic, but it won’t come easy and they have to figure out this Arlington nonsense.

Let’s hope Lebarron Johnson Jr. is a morning person.

UP NEXT

Texas will play an elimination game against Kansas State at 9 AM on Thursday. KSU super-reliever Tyson Neighbors will be lurking. Lebarron Johnson Jr. (7-2, 2.81 ERA) will get the ball for Texas.
