If I offended anyone with the Gas thread, I apologize, everyone in this country is having a bad time in something or another, However, I think that everyone should have a job, but there's just not that many to go around to everyone and everyone is feeling its effects ...I always wonder how this Great country of ours got this way...we used to be so strong and brave and now it's just not the same

I don't think the country is near as bad off as you make it sound but I can explain quite easily why we have the problems we do.

2 main contributors, globalization and automation. Semiskilled decent paying manufacturing jobs have been shipped overseas or have been taken over by robots which leaves semiskilled or unskilled labor into low paying retail and service jobs.

An interesting case study is the home video market. Dominated by blockbuster and within a few years redbox and Netflix completely disrupted and entire industry. Instead of a brick and mortar store you have a kiosk or a warehouse which require a much smaller workforce. Now you have streaming that will eliminate the people that service the kiosk and who work in the warehouse.

Fb, I have to say I think you are very wrong. Not only is this the best country in the world, our standard of living has never been higher. Poor people today live longer more comfortable lives than the very richest in the past. Could it be better? Yes. We could end the ethanol program, freeing up enormous tracts of land for deer, birds , and butterflies. We could end the war on drugs, bankrupting the cartels and firing perhaps half the police force. I could go on and on. It's not the dollars, it's what you get for the money.

Wasn't saying this wasn't the best country cause it is, Standard of livings higher, been to meat market later or HEB?, A hundred dollar bill will buy ya 2 bags of groceries, poor people live better? you must be in a jungle village with 2 guys cranking the internet with a bike, none of that cartel and drug stuffs gonna happen, and firing the Police is out of the question, Zag is right about SS, ya can't live on it, that's why ya have to save and get other methods, wonder who made all the money in the Oil Patch this time around, wasn't the workers?As far as living longer , go to a nursing home sometimes and see the ones that are living longer and ask yourself is that the way to live longer or is it a slow death sentence...you young people have made it more expensive to live with all this new tech stuff, well, what the hell was wrong with the old phone on the kitchen wall?

It taked 1.5 gallons of fuel to make one gallon of ethanol. Typical govt math. Corn not going to cattle feed it is going to fuel. All consumers pay the price. Iowa farmers don't give a shit about ND or Texas oil workers.

PJ O'Rourke wrote a great book about this a few years ago. Probably can find it on Amazon. All the trouble in the world. He goes to places like Bangladesh. Sure, things are worse than here now. But better than anywhere not long ago. Government is the problem elsewhere just like here.
