It’s not a lie…if you believe it – George Costanza/Seinfeld

I doubt I’ll be quoting a lot of George’s quotes, but when you stop laughing at this one, it does have a kernel of truth to it. What do I mean?

Sometimes the biggest lies are the ones we tell ourselves. Examples…

“I don’t have a drinking problem”

“I don’t have a drug problem”

“I can stop anytime I want”

“I’m not good enough”

“I don’t deserve to be happy”

“I don’t need counseling”

“I’m fine, don’t worry about me”

These lies demonstrate that we want to be in control of our own lives, even at the expense of our health, safety, and overall well-being. Our desire for full control of our lives can not only be detrimental to ourselves, but to the people we love around us.

One of the hardest things I experienced growing up was seeing my Mom lie to herself that her drinking alcohol was in control. Watching a loved one self-destruct is heartbreaking. It took my Mom to finally realize she had a problem when my older sister had her first child, she decided to quit cold turkey so that she wouldn’t harm her grandchild while in her care.

Taking an occasional self-inventory is a good practice to make sure we are on the right path and not heading to destruction. Sometimes with the help of others who love us can we finally look in the mirror and see that we have to make a big change, to give up full control and hand it over to our Creator.

I pray that all of us will have the courage to make the necessary changes that are in the will of our Creator. He’s always there to provide a helping hand.

Hope y’all have a fun Friday and great weekend!
