“Great opportunities to help others seldom come, but small ones surround us every day.” —Sally Koch

I recently watched a spot on The CBS Morning News about a man who made a dramatic change to his life. Dick Kazan was a very successful business owner. He made a fortune and then retired. He wasn’t happy about the man he had been for most of those years. By his own admission, he wasn’t a very kind man; his focus was making money since he had come from a poor family.

Then at age 46 he began to change, he read a lot of books by inspirational authors, and they inspired him to be kind to others, to help others feel good about themselves. He started by just meeting his neighbors out on the streets, then he began greeting his neighbors every school day as they drove to school or work and as he entered and left grocery stores. He would stop them, say hello, tell them they are beautiful/handsome, other nice comments to show them they are valued and loved. He’s now an icon in his neighborhood and he’s received many thank you notes and letters from people who were going through a rough time, and he made them feel better.

This is a simple thing that has meant so much to those around him.

I have often felt the kindness of a stranger who says hello on the elevator, a smile or a kind word and it does make my day go better. The opposite is true, if someone is rude to me, it puts me in a bad mood and sad to say, sometimes if I don’t stop myself, it may spill over to how I treat others that day.

I encourage all of us to try this simple gesture of saying hello, smile, make a nice comment and see what reaction you get. You may just make someone who’s going through a rough patch feel better, enough to carry on and make someone else’s day a lot better too.
