“Faith is taking the first step, even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” —Martin Luther King Jr.

I’ll start by providing a couple of definitions of “faith”.

1. Complete trust or confidence in someone or something.

2. Strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof.

I disagree with number 2 a bit. A strong belief in God doesn’t have to mean it’s out of a fear of something bad happening or fear of being separated from God without proof.

I think faith can depend on what someone’s definition of “proof” means to them.

Faith in our Creator can come about by many different things or events in one’s life. Some can just look at nature and realize that our world is so complex with millions of species that form an ecosystem that appears to have been created by design; it’s not a stretch for them to believe in a divine creator. Some look at historical evidence before coming to faith. Others have had what they call divine appointments that can’t be explained by any other means.

Whatever your standard of “proof” might be, taking that first step of faith can be scary. For most of my young adult life, I didn’t want to take that first step. I wanted to be in control of my life. But the evidence started to pile up, circumstances, research I had done regarding all faiths, science, etc., although I didn’t see the rest of the staircase, I’m glad I started that climb. I’ve never regretted taking that first step, it led me to many divine appointments ever since.
