“The world is extremely interesting to a joyful soul.” —Alexandra Stoddard

Have you ever noticed when you are feeling down, maybe even depressed, that the world around you seems as if you are seeing it in black and white, no color to it. It’s dark, you pull the shades down because you don't want to look outside. Your soul hurts so much, you just want to go to bed early and sleep in. You try to watch TV and all you can do is channel surf, nothing to see with hundreds of channels to choose from.

I've been there several times in my life. The worst was probably when my Dad died unexpectedly. I was mad at the world, mad at God, mad at my circumstances because I had to be “the strong one” to handle my Dad’s estate affairs. I was a miserable person to be around, and my wife and kids noticed, so much that my youngest son didn’t want to talk to me about a problem he was having. It wasn’t until I went to Grief Recovery that I processed my grief and got back to the happy go lucky me.

As the above quote states, I got my joy back, I was able to see the world in color again. I repaired my relationship with my Creator and with my wife and kids and the world became interesting again. I gained a new sense of purpose, to help others who are suffering the depths of grief. I stopped abusing alcohol, which for a short term had numbed my pain. It was a long hard 3-year road trip with no scenery but darkness and the absence of joy.

I was blessed with a good friend, who listened to me one evening over dinner. This friend didn’t judge me, he reached out and suggested I get the help I needed. I will be forever grateful to him. He saved my life.

This world needs more friends like the one I mentioned.

How can you be a friend to one in need?

May you all be blessed with good friends and be a good friend to others.

Proverbs 17:17 & John 15:12-15
