“And so, become yourself. Because the past is just a goodbye” – Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young

I grew up listening to CSNY. When I was at UT Austin, my older brother and I would go down to 6th street. There was a band called Black Rose that could play cover for CSNY and they sounded just like them. We became groupies when they played at the Steamboat bar. Back then I was too busy getting buzzed and chasing girls; I didn’t pay attention to any meanings of the songs. As I have grown older, I’ve paid more attention to the lyrics.

If you read/listen to this song (Teach Your Children), my interpretation is that we all grow up hearing about our parents’ fears and dreams for our future. Those fears come and go and become the past and then it’s the next generations turn to have fears and dreams of their own. If we can teach our children the lessons we’ve learned along the way, perhaps they will learn from our mistakes and make our world a better place.

The thing I’ve noticed as a parent of 3 adult children is they are watching us all the time, whether we know it or not. So be careful what you are doing, even if you think they are not watching. I picked up a lot of traits from my parents, mostly good, but some bad. It’s the bad ones that I hope I haven’t passed down to my kids. I can already see in my granddaughters how they have started to imitate my daughter and son-in-law’s traits and their grandpa’s sense of humor. It brings me great joy.

Teach your children/grandchildren well my friends!
