"It’s not uncommon for people to spend their whole life waiting to start living.”
Eckhart Tolle
The other day, I was asked if I was living in the so sought-after state of the “now,” the present, which question sparked contemplation. That’s a question to consider asking yourself.
Perhaps it is the “absence” of something. In this way, it may be when you “accept” others’s commissions; that is, when others were annoying or even hurtful. Or perhaps it is the “absence” of something else; that is, when you accept others’s omissions; that is, when they fail to compliment or affirm you, don’t listen to you, or aren’t giving.
For myself, I think I’m “present” not when something is missing, but when something is present. I am present when I feel like listening actively, when I feel like giving when I probably shouldn’t, and when I feel like complimenting others, even when it is not called for.
Importantly, that definition of being “present” is a function of me, not the world, and second, it requires that I am connected to my Higher Power. So, that’s my barometer. If I do not instinctively feel like doing those things, even when there is good cause not to, then I am not in proper alignment with my Higher Power. For me, it is not a state of neutrality, but one of stored or potential energy, just waiting to become kinetic.
Today, let’s strive to live in the “present;” but perhaps more importantly, let’s strive to determine how we want to define, for ourselves, what that even means in the first place.
