“When someone else harms you and you are sore, then you are in the wrong.”
Bill Wilson

Recently, I found myself not just complaining about one person to another, but doing so emphatically. Why do we do that?

At its core, I think it relates to self righteousness. Don’t get me wrong, we are frequently confronted with another’s annoying behavior, even outright mistakes. But if someone annoys me, and I am sore, then I am in the wrong.

I hope that when we see the log in the next eye (Matthew 7:1-5), we pause and consider whose sin bothers us more. Why are we not equally bothered by our own sins? Self righteousness is not limited to the dogmatic professorial type; it also includes being more concerned for, and motivated by, the knowledge of sin of others than of our own. It exists when we condemn others, but excuse ourselves.

I sure need the insight-giving and convicting ministry of the Holy Spirit to guide me today, and to help me spot when I’m being unholy just because I can.

So my prayer for you today is that you refrain from gossip and intolerance even though you have a reason to do both, and instead, practice love and tolerance, despite having a reason not to.
