“Problems cannot be solved with the same mind set that created them.”
Albert Einstein

Nobody wants to be told what to do, so let’s flip the script.

Historically, I fell victim to focusing on keeping my side of the street clean-succeeding for the most part-and then using that obedience as an excuse to justify energy a pet sin. Frankly, I didn’t want to be told to “not do” that-or to do everything-right. I should have told myself not that I “have to,” but that I “get to.”

If I am sleeping with someone other than my spouse, then I am not living under His authority. If I am abusing alcohol, and it interferes with how those I claim to love experience life, then I am not living under His authority. If I am cutting corners at work, then I am not living under His authority.

The calculus has always been different from the one by which I operated. Choosing obedience does not mean that we “have to” or that we “got to do” anything; instead, it means that we “get to.” To realize and appreciate that obedience in those challenging areas requires merely the slightest change in perspective from me, to Him, is liberating. When we do that, we see a vast ocean of freedom. In that boundless ocean of freedom lies an opportunity to find those we admire waiting for us there, and an opportunity to experience joy differently.

Today, let’s strive for a different mindset-one in which we recognize, appreciate, and then capitalize on the pure freedom that awaits us when we dispose of our pet sin.
