they crossed paths once in the 2015 AAC championship game the cougars won 24/13. Be interesting to see if this is the makings of a rivalry between Texas/Baylor. Welcome to the big time guys.

Fwiw these guys have this in common. They were born the same year, MR is 4 months older, both have three kids, and both guys have made it to the big time in college coaching just 8 days apart.

Matt Rhule is a good coach but it will be 4-5 years I think before they are competeive. They basically won't have a sophomore or freshman class next year. I hope Baylor has resonable expectations

One of the things that hurt Art Briles was a lack of discipline, not just off the field but on it as well. Baylor was always in the bottom ten in most teams penalized. Temple was the exact opposite so it will be interesting to see how the Baylor players respond to him.

that's a stupid comment. i argue that the big12 is the toughest to go undefeated in-- you can't have a bad day in this league except against kansas maybe (oh wait...). but in this league, if your qb turns his ankle and you aren't ready to roll in a big way, you're not going to get beat 20-6; you're going to get beat 54-16.

Big 12 sucks this year. OU, which conquered the "toughest to go undefeated in" Big 12, got their stuff pushed in when the ventured outside the big 12 waters by Houston and OSU. Pretty much every Big 12 team had horrible OOC showings

Stupid aye... The Big 12 is weak sauce and spiralling down the drain... It's Texas and OU with a bunch of chumps. The idiots are going to play a round robin schedule and then have a rematch for a CCG, lol. I'm ready for Texas to bail!

I'd like to get a commissioner that has half a brain. One True Champion is a GREAT idea - unless you don't name one. Poach someone else, instead of being the carcass attached by the buzzards (see Louisville). Rematch in conference championship game - are you kidding? Whose idea was this? If you already beat a team once, will you get an extra "data point" by beating them again? All this does is set up a team to get knocked out, instead of giving them a leg up. And why do we only have 1 guy on the CFB selection committee? Come on Bowlsby - man up or step down!

Looking back our only big ooc win was OSU over Pitt.

People don't seem to realize how bad the Big 12 is. OU got beat by the only 2 teams that had a true pulse.

Auburn looms.

I think they're dogs in every bowl game but 1.

thought this would already be posted.

Lane Kniffen has accepted the job at UH. (per article read about 1hr earlier)

edit: this is probably not the thread to post

Who ever they choose it sounds like they're going to put a "Herman clause" in it. Supposedly they haven't decided on a coach yet.

Except for the fact that Baylol f'ing sucks. They have 1 commit so far this year and they just lost 6 in a row. Not much of a rivalry when one team sucks as bad as Baylol will. Rhule should have stayed at Temple, BAD move

Baylor had to pony up a crazy contract. I believe it's 7 years. Financially it makes sense. There is still no dominant Texas program so Baylor can rebound. They may never be what they were but if he's a good coach he can keep them on an Ok State level

I don't think anyone would take that job unless 7 years were guaranteed. The attrition from the previous classes and the fact that they only have 1 guy this year so far means that they are going to be in for a rough 2-3 years. Rhule sounds like a great coach but not sure about his fit. New Yorker, Penn State for college and has spent most of his time in the NE. He will have about a week before the dead period to talk to recruits. He needs to hire at least 3-4 guys with Texas ties or its going to be rough. He has to sell Baylor to recruits and he has got Herman, Sumlin, Patterson, Stoops, Gundy and Orgeron all hunting Texas for the top talent.

Baylor won't be going for top talent. They rarely went for top talent under Briles. It wasn't until the last few classes under Briles that they landed bigger fish with some consistency. I agree on needing some assistants with Texas ties.

Does Traylor get a call from this guy? If he wants Texas ties, that would be a good guy to get on your side.

That would be smart hire. Of course I don't know what Traylor's motives are given that reports indicated that he didn't really want any part of Texas' future. I don't know if Herman would have kept him anyways but the scuttlebutt is that he didn't really give him a chance to make the decision.

Is this sarcasm or stupidity? Serious question.

Well a couple of things. He left a school with terrible facilities who was playing in an NFL stadium that was one third full at best.

He's now at a school with upgraded facilities that are as good as anywhere and a new stadium.

Fwiw, his father is a coach and has also been a Church of the Nazarene pastor so he may not have a hard time adjusting to a school like Baylor where students have to attend chapel their first two semesters. He just might be an improvement over Briles in relating to parents because after he got fired the top 10 players in Baylor's recruiting class bolted and a lot of those players had parents who were angry at Briles because they felt they were lied to about what was going on.

A lot of Baylor fans felt Traylor was responsible for poaching players from their recruting class. I know that's not exactly how it went down but so many Baylor fans are convinced that UT and ESPN are trying to destroy Baylor fb. You'd be surprised how many of them aren't willing to hold Art Briles accountable for what happened. They're convinced it's the media and their BOR.

It's not sad some of those fans are pathetic.

Count me as sad and pathetic! Our Board of Regents blows - they took a ridiculous situation and made it worse. They give out headlines like "horrific", which get made into headlines of the Wall Street Journal of all papers, but in fact are describing the rapes themselves, not the action or inaction of the coaches. If Briles is to blame, which I do blame him for bringing the guys on campus, then how in the hell can you not fire the rest of the coaching staff? The BOR half a**ed it in order to try to salvage a football season, which anyone with half a brain could see was doomed from last May. Why would the BOR do a bait and switch on Briles? Because the alleged football player assaults constitute less than 10% of the total reported assaults in that time period. There is something bad in the water in Waco, and the BOR and Starr dropped the ball/had their head in the ground/covered up the in order to protect the institution, which they were charged with protecting! My prayer for Coach Rhule is that the alums will give him a fair shot, recognizing that we are staring at 2 wins next year, 3 in year 2, and maybe 4-5 in year 3 --- if in fact Rhule is as good as he appears to be. BTW - there are a number, but certainly not a large number, that blame UT, but they are idiots.

Look at the issues strong had his first year at Texas. Got in late, Sumlin poached some of his upper level guys in that class and he had no relationship with the high school coaches. He had to fall back on his Florida ties. Rhule is in an even more difficult situation. Its late in the game and he is in a more difficult situation than what Strong was in. Strong was able to turn that around and I think having a guy like Traylor helped a ton. Hopefully the fans realize its going to be a rough couple of years.

Wetzel is a good dude. Been a while since I have been a high school coach but SA coaches did have a reputation as being somewhat clickish. Most of that had to do with the three biggest districts in the area only hiring from within. Its a good hire, San Antonio area is starting to produce more D1 talent but I think a Houston or Metroplex guy would have been a better choice.

Blaming the media is pretty much the go to move these days.

Don't mean to digress especially since I'm the one that started the thread, but you mentioned my hometown of San Antonio. Compared to the other big cities, Austin, Houston, and the metroplex, we've always been way behind in producing D1 talent. There's no reason for it but it's always been that way. I live in the Sacramento, CA area now and the cities are approx the same size but they produce a lot more D1 talent.

From San Antonio, Never coached in San Antonio but I have coached in the area. The big reason for not producing a lot of D1 talent is demographics. Lost of varsity teams starting 5'7" defensive tackles and 5'5" running backs. Most of the talent coming out of the city is on the east side of town from Converse up through Cibilo. Houston, Judson, Clemens and Steele Produce most of the talent in the city. The NW side is also growing with some Talent coming out of Warren and Brennen.

Is this a racist comment? Lol

It is what it is. I played at and coached at Schools with 5'5" running backs and 5'7" DTs. Didn't have any college coaches showing up to watch spring ball. We had teams make the playoffs and get smoked in the first round. Sad thing was kids were doing what we asked them to do they were just getting beat in the 1 on 1 matchups.
