Brown, a defensive end out of Denton Ryan, had yet to hear from the Texas coaching staff when he got word of the offer on Monday afternoon. Nevertheless, Brown was excited to receive the news.
Key quote: "My defensive coordinator just told me that they offered me. I was at lunch. That just made my day," Brown said. "It came as a surprise to me. I just put on a big smile because I was excited."
Who had Brown been in contact with from Texas?
"Nobody. Like I said, it was surprising."
Hot prospect: The Texas offer brought Brown's offer total to 17. Along with the Longhorns, he's holding scholarships from programs like Baylor, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Duke, Houston and SMU, to name a few.
The 6-5, 230-pounder isn't in a hurry to rush through the recruiting process.
"I want to still take it slow. I don't want to commit too early," Brown said. "I just want to see what is the right environment for me, see where I'm comfortable. That's when I'll make my decision."
Visit plans: Brownhas been to junior days at Houston and Oklahoma. He'll be at SMU's junior day this weekend and is also hoping to attend upcoming events at Texas, Northwestern, Baylor and Duke.
"I thought (Houston) was a great football program. Absolutely," Brown said. "Oklahoma went to the final four (College Football Playoff. Houston won the Peach Bowl. Those are great football programs, great campuses."
Thoughts on Texas: When I talked to Brown, the UT offer was so new he really couldn't say where Texas might fight into his big picture. He listed Oklahoma, Baylor, SMU, Iowa, Duke, Texas Tech and Houston as schools that are standing out. The Longhorns will have their chance to move into that grouping if Brown does make it in for UT's junior day on February 27.
"I haven't really talked to anyone at Texas so I don't know much about them," Brown said. "They always had a good tradition of football. They're really known by their football."
A little more on Brown: Named the District 5-6A Newcomer of the Yearin 2015, Brown tells me he'd like to eventually be a coach or a teacher. Academics will be a big factor in his eventual college decision.
"I want to see if academics really matter (to college coaches). That's mainly it," Brown said. "Academics are first for me."
Brown already has an impressive frame at 6-5 and 230, and it's easy to picture him at 250 pounds or more lining up at strongside defensive end in college. His size jumps off the page, but Brown said coaches like his first step as much as his physical stature.
"My ball get off - that's what coaches say they like about me," Brown said. "And they like my swim move also. I need to work on not getting up field too much, and sometimes I'm a little high. I'm going to work on staying lower."
