It was a busy weekend for junior college tight end Sal Cannella. The Scottsdale Community College standout squeezed in official visits to Auburn and Texas before returning home on Monday morning, and Cannella now faces the task of sorting through his three finalists - Texas, Auburn, Maryland - before announcing his final decision on Wednesday.
Prior to leaving Austin, the 6-5, 230-pound Cannella talked about his UT visit and said he came away impressed with everything he saw.
"Honestly, when I first got here, I didn't really know too much about Austin. When we pulled up, I was amazed," Cannella said. (The UT campus) is really in the heart of the city, it surprised me. Just being around coach (Corby) Meekins, coach (Tom) Herman, they're just really cool, down to earth guys that care about winning. That's what they preach, that's what they're going to come in here and do. Overall, it was a great experience."
Cannella flew into Austin on Saturday after spending a couple nights at Auburn. Both schools, along with Maryland, are hoping to land a commitment from Cannella this week, and Texas told him he'd have a chance to play early if he was to choose the Longhorns and enroll in January.
"They have two tight ends on the roster right now, I believe. Since I'm a JUCO guy, they expect me to come in and play right away. Of course, you have to earn the spot, win playing time. Nothing gets handed to you.
"I think I'm a versatile tight end, can put my hand in the dirt, line up outside ... it doesn't really matter. All I'd have to do is put on a little weight, which isn't a problem at all. I would expect me to win the spot, that's what I indent to do."
Cannella is currently weighing in at 230 pounds but said he'll begin adding good weight as soon as he arrives to whatever campus he chooses. The goal is to bulk up without losing any speed and mobility.
In the next 48 hours, Cannella wants to step away from the recruiting process and recover from a hectic weekend while finalizing his decision. He plans to announce his commitment on Wednesday afternoon.
I'm going to go home, think about it, then going to announce a decision on Wednesday. I'll probably put it out on Twitter," Cannella said. "It's hard. It really is. My going in a million directions. It's a lot to take in. This weekend was a long one, so I'm going to unwind and just go from there.
"But it's been fun. I've been enjoying the process."
