(If this already has been said on here apologies for not knowing.)

A source with knowledge of the situation has told Horns247 that Texas defensive coordinator Vance Bedford is expected to be demoted from his position.

Bedford has yet to show the defense fixes and improvement he promised at the beginning of the season. His team currently ranks No. 87 in total defense.

Bedford came to Texas with Strong, when he was hired in 2014, and has been calling defensive plays for the head coach since 2010 while he was at Louisville. Strong and Bedford were together at Florida where they helped the Gators to a BCS national championship in 2008 and the two grew close prior to building elite defenses with the Cardinals.

In 2013, Louisville led the nation in total defense, rushing defense and sacks while ranking second in scoring defense. In 2012, his defense was ranked No. 16 in passing defense and No. 23 in total defense.

After he arrived at Texas, the Longhorns ranked No. 25 in total defense and allowed just 4.68 yards per play during his first season in 2014.

This is now the second time Bedford has been relieved of his duties as a defensive coordinator. He spent two seasons at Oklahoma State (2005-06) before head coach Mike Gundy let him go.

That was his only other stop as a defensive play caller in addition to Texas and Louisville.

Strong said following the loss in Stillwater on Saturday that he made "a few calls" during the game. With Bedford having called the defense for Strong at Louisville and at Texas, Saturday's game against Oklahoma in the AT&T Red River Showdown at the Cotton Bowl is expected to be the first time Strong will have called a defense on his own since his final season at Florida in 2009.

Means nothing!

26 missed tackles that netted nearly 230 yards with four big gainers with 3 TD's versus OSU isn't fixed by play calling, neither will players being out of position!

I have not, and will not, go back and watch this game, but I just heard something interesting on a podcast. They claim that Strong took over in the second half. For what its worth, we gave up one TD in the second half, but note, OSU took over on that possession on the two yard line after an interception. Other than that, they were limited to two field goals. And it would be easy to dismiss that as OSU going conservative, but until about 4 minutes left in the game, OSU did not stop passing down field.
I don't know that Strong's play calling itself was the difference maker, but maybe the players just respond differently to him. Its not that hard to imagine. Maybe they don't have any confidence in Bedford. Maybe they just want to play harder for Strong because the realize his job is on the line.
What I know now is Strong probably needs to win 6 out of the next 8 to keep his job, and despite reports, if the OU game goes way south, they may let him go mid season and enter the Herman sweep stakes.

Reports: Texas close to moving on from Charlie Strong at season's end

Texas' 50-47 overtime win over Notre Dame from a month ago feels like it was forever ago now, especially now that the Longhorns have continued to see their defense gashed on big stages.

According to Pete Thamel of Sports Illustrated, a "high-ranking Texas official said on Sunday night that Strong is 'very close' to losing his job at the end of the season."

The news comes after Texas lost on the road in Week 5 to Oklahoma State 49-31. It was the Longhorns' second consecutive loss of the season. Texas plays Oklahoma in Dallas on Saturday, one week after the Sooners bounced back to beat TCU 52-46.

Thamel's report states that no move will be made in-season because "there's no logical candidate on the staff to take over the program." That would fall in line with the stance of Texas athletic director Mike Perrin, who told reporters over the weekend that he would be "evaluating everything" about the program.

It appears as if more, not less, will fall on Strong's plate as he apparently fights for his job. 247Sports late Sunday reported that Strong will take over play-calling duties on defense as coordinator Vance Bedford will be demoted. Strong has an incredibly successful background as a defensive coordinator, which is one reason his teams' defensive woes have been so troubling.

Strong is scheduled to appear on the Big 12's coaching teleconference Monday.

Texas is 2-2 four games into Strong's third season and 13-16 overall. The process to rebuild and change the culture of the Longhorns program has been arduous to say the least. But while Strong's efforts to clean up the thaeam ve been admirable, there have been more mistakes made in his assistant coaching hires. Sterlin Gilbert has resurrected the once-dead offense, but only after Strong went through Shawn Watson, Joe Wickline and Jay Norvell as play-callers in his first two seasons.

Things haven't been much better on defense or special teams, for that matter. The Horns went 1-of-4 on extra points and 0-for-1 on field goals against Oklahoma State. Additionally, Texas has given up at least 47 points in four of their last five games dating back to last season. Demoting Bedford midseason could be a last-stand effort for Strong.

By demoting Vance Bedford, Charlie Strong has now gone through eight assistants in three seasons. Think about that for a moment.

Charlie Strong's demotion of Bedford had better work. Making in-season staff changes 2 years in a row points toward another staff change.

The fact that this is all playing out publicly with two full months to go in the season means, at the very least, that things could even more tense before they better -- if they get better at all. Texas is a mess, and it's not just because of football team's record.

Strong admittedly called some plays, he never went into depth.
sure, but if you apply a little logic to that, he had to have completely taken over at some point. They wouldn't have been switching play callers back and forth. The most obvious time to do that would have been half time

I'd like to hear him say he did!

1 TD punched in from the 2 and 2 field goals on 159 yards is significant. Gundy did let off the gas a little, you'd think.

I don't care any more about who called plays. Plain and simple the D was horrid! Tackling was a complete joke and what in the hell is up with our special teams play. I stuck up for Charlie here at the office and sometimes on this board but man it's time for consistent winning to happen! Done.

Not really. In fact, the play by play guys commented on the fact that they were still passing and running tempo late in the 4th. We got the ball with about 4 minutes left, and for some reason punted from midfield. After that they started running clock. Prior to that they were running the same offense as the first half.

You're looking for a positive! I can respect that but man sometimes you just have to see what this is. If some how this Saturday we play defense and keep OU under 20 I'll come back and eat crow. I hope we win no matter but our defense can't stop anyone.

Obviously. I saw the same thing everyone else did, and it was pathetic. At one point the play by play guys called our secondary "miserable". It was completely unacceptable. On the other hand, its not like we are going to be bringing in new players or some amazing DC mid season. We have to hope that our D can work back to being respectable. They played better when Strong was presumably running the show. I saw a bunch of big point totals in our conference this week. A moderate improvement could make a big impact. Its hope hanging by a thread, but with 8 weeks left, what else is there?

this guy needs to have NOTHING to do with the defense....DB's.....wtf

Charlie Strong formally announces that he will run Texas' defense. Vance Bedford joins Clay Jennings in the DB room. #HookEm

The coach is responsible for those players missing those tackles too. Coaching is not just calling plays....teaching technique and tackling are just as big a part.

"Know" shit!

Accountability is somethin'

"Have you played well this year, Malik Jefferson? "No. I haven't done anything to impact this team. That's what's eating me alive right now."

I don't blame Strong for doing what it takes to give his team the best chance to win. However, if he makes it another season good luck getting a quality DC to come to Austin where the coach will have little to no job security.

They couldn't tackle their way out a shit house looking for TP Saturday!

What it boils down to is the football team is not fundamentally sound.

There is just to much really basic stuff that this team either doesn't do, or does very poorly. I'm talking about football 101 here, tackling, setting the edge on defense, gap integrity, and not even knowing how to get the defensive backfield lined up.

That stuff is on the head coach. He should be able to see at practice and after game film sessions what is wrong and have the ability to get it fixed.

I'm glad I don't live in Dallas or anywhere near BLH right now. Hes bound to be looking for someone to pay for this terrible injustice against Bedford.

So all Texas needs is players according to you? You always seem to imply that is all Texas needs? Which is it? Take a side. Anyone who says the coaches are not getting it done is met by you saying "the coach didn't miss the tackle, block, etc". So when should a coach be fired?

No, Coaching is an issue, but young players even though talented take time to develop. Take a side? I look for change. Like I've said repeatedly, One of Strong' biggest issues is his loyalty to his coaches. Bedford and Watson were both given too much time, that is on Strong.

I don't think he will survive, I think the team is better than last year and the next coach is set with a good roster.

I don't need to pick a side. I want to see improvement, yet I also know it's going to be a tough road when your best players are 1st and 2nd year guys.

One thing worth noting: Just like OSU's defense looked much better once UT's two hoss RBs went out, UT's defense looked much better once OSU's stud WR went out. Injuries IMO played a major factor in the 2nd half results for both teams.

From re watching the game. The main problem I seen is the communication between the corner and safety. The safety has been out of place alot. It's the communication and it's coaching. Maybe it's Bedford or Jennings or Strong or all 3. I thought the front 7 did ok with 4 down linemen and with the corners playing man to man. When the corners played off the receivers, they usually get burned on crossing plays. The DB coaches need to get their head right if they want to have a job. I truly believe Bedford will be gone with or without Strong at the end of the year

Yes! Unless he is absent during practice...
