January 12th. The Longhorns (23-2, 9-1) went into Columbia trying to get a a signature win against South Carolina (22-1, 10-0). The Longhorns ended the game +10 in turnovers (12-22) and +28 in shot attempts (79-51) but was -17 on the scoreboard when time expired. Everyone has mentioned Madison’s poor shooting in that game (3/19) but it was almost the entire team that contributed to their woeful 27.8% shooting. The Texas defense sped SC up and caused them to commit double their turnover average but the Longhorns couldn’t capitalize, missing more shots than the Gamecocks attempted.

The 1st quarter in that game put the Horns into a hole they weren’t capable of climbing out of that day, shooting 4/26 from the floor (15.4%) and down by 9 at quarter’s end (18-9).

The bright spots for Texas were Kyla Oldacre (11 points, 16 rebounds), Bryanna Preston (7 points) and Justice Carlton (8 points). The starting 5 combined for 22 points - Taylor Jones was scoreless in 19 minutes on the floor.

South Carolina can be beaten but not if the best Texas players don’t perform. I don’t expect SC to turn the ball over as much as they did last month and I’ll be shocked if the Longhorns don’t shoot better. This is an opportunity similar to what Texas had against UCONN last season in Austin. The opportunity to prove they COULD do it…which they did, gaining the program’s 1st victory over the Huskies. Getting a win over SC won’t be the program’s 1st, it would be the most important of the series.
