I agree with Flour Bluff thread's about Coach Strong. But I've noticed as others have that Tom Herman is destined for greatness as a hc. Eventually I'll get excited.

You know what will be his most important hire? His dc, I know duh. But let me tell you what I've noticed. There are 128 schools the highest ranked Big XII defense is KSU and they're 57th that's not exactly the 85 Bears. TCU and WV are between 60-70 and the rest of the Big XII occupies the last third in other words 80 and higher. Look this guy Herman appears to be a spread offense guy so I'm sure he'll do alright with whoever he hires. But if we get an outstanding dc somebody like Brent Venables or one of the good one's in the Big X, or somebody else of that caliber then Tom Herman can own the Big XII and it might not take long. As far as I'm concerned every Big XII dc is stealing from their employer. The Big X is by far the best conference this year and their best teams have top notch defenses. Imo, the Big XII must go in another direction on the field and that is in the area of defense. If we have more of the same for the next few years our conference will dissolve.

And I've heard some interesting tidbits about the man. He's a member of Mensa? How many fb coaches are. The sports information people at Texas will have a field day promoting that. His wife is not a typical coaches wife. She called up that slimeball John Lopez in Houston and gave him h***. I remember when JL used to be in San Antonio with the SA Light and even by aggie standards he's a lowlife. His youngest son was named after the character in Top Gun, Maverick. Hey the man is unique.

Speaking of greatness, hope this is a good omen because Tom Herman is born in Ohio. Here's a list of some Ohio-born coaches and their college W-L numbers. Of these only Harbaugh and Schembechler don't have national titles.

Woody Hayes 238-72-10
Jim Harbaugh 78-32
Don James 178-76-3
Urban Meyer 165-28
Les Miles 141-55
Bo Schembechler 234-65-8
Ara Parseghian 170-58-6
Bob Stoops 188-48
Jim Tressel 229-79-2

Few other Ohio-born Big12 coaches.
Gary Pinkel 191-110-3
Bo Pelini 80-36
John Mackovic 95-82-3

You know I'd forgotten about all the good coaches that have come out of Ohio. By comparison Texas hasn't done as well. However, I've read that while Herman was born in Cincinnati I believe, he grew up in Cali. His bio said he never knew his father. He was the oc at tOSU when they won the nc. One of their qb's said he has the ability to relate to each player one on one. Like I said he's unique.

Venables does well with top talent, about like every other DC in college football. Not sure why you think he hung the moon. Compare the talent. Bring him back to the Big 12 and he'll be no better than Patterson, Stoops etc.

Like I said a few games back. I don't care about how many yards you put up in the end it's how many points you're allowing. In the B12 pretty much every team will put yds on you. So don't concentrate so much on the rankings of yds but do so on points.

KSU - #35 in points allowed
TCU - #60 in points allowed
WVU-#37 in points allowed
OKSTATE- #57 in points allowed
TEXAS - #90ish in points allowed
TECH DEAD LAST

Big 12 defense would be better if holding was actually called, other than for a tackle, in the Big 12.
THIS!! Man this is a pet peeve of mine. Holding is killing this game. Defenses are screwed in general.

A widespread epidemic of poor tackling outside of the Big 10 and Alabama also contributes IMO.
You are right but.....some of the tackling issues are related to one on one tackling that is tough to do in the open field because of the spread offenses.

I look at the rankings and the top 6 or 7 teams and I see that all of them are in the top 20 for defensive rankings. Then we have the Big XII defenses. Have you forgotten that we bombed out in all of our big non con games this year? And that pretty much says it all.
