Very interesting interview on the Washington Post with W's chief speechwriter about Melania Trump mess. Here's a quote where he explains how the entire speechwriting staff is responsible for vetting a speech.
The decision-making team in a presidential campaign is typically much smaller. And a lot of the pressure to vet is placed on speechwriting staff. The candidate and campaign inner circle will give close attention to key speeches, but are generally focused on big-picture content.
Later in the interview he claims....
This was a staff failure, indicating a weak campaign apparatus.
I think what worries me the most of a Donald Trump presidency is that he is not going to be able to surround himself with quality people. I remember reading an article a couple of months ago that said there Republican politicians and strategists will not be lining up for positions in an administration like you would normally expect. He would still be able to fill his administration...it just won't be with the quality of people that normally join a newly formed administration. And we are seeing that already with the Republican Convention line up of speakers.
I wish I could find this article (if anyone remembers it please feel free to post it) because I think this speech faux pas is a foreboding sign of the quality (or lack thereof) people Trump would employ in his administration.
