What is good defense by Big 12 standards?

Is last year's OU defense the best to hope for in this league? I think a defense that doesn't give up 3rd downs and stonewalls the running game, but can also rush the passer in passing situations. Secondary doesn't have to be great, just good tackling in space so as not to give up big plays, plus be ball hawks. Hold opponents to 24 points a game in league play.

Holding teams below their average.

Avg yardage or Avg scoring?

I prefer keeping their avg scoring down! In todays offenses we're going to get yards put on us but some how we need to keep them out of the end zone.

if a team could get a front 4 that could control the LOS and collapse the pocket, everything else would take care of itself. Is there such a thing? We had M Brown and also had a committment from Ashawn ..Rogers? Robinson?..anyway, the guy that went to Bama and is a star...we almost had em both at the same time. You put those two...or equally talented together with good edge rushers and you win lots of games Big 12 or otherwise....maybe it isnt possible to get that, but we got some very good DT's last year..that is how you you start anyway.

Obviously points are king, but defense might not be responsible for all points scored. In general a good defensive performance you are holding teams well below their averages.

Big 12 offenses get shut down in OOC games and bowl season. It is a myth that Big 12 offenses are SO good and a great defense is hopeless. BS. I've watched Big 12 football since 1996. I witnessed Tech, OU, Texas , and Oklahoma State start the spread in the Big 12. I also witnessed great Texas and OU defenses.

I agree with this now. I think the once great Big 12 DC's have decided to play defense by playing offense and trying to outscore the other team rather than hassle with trying to stop them. Stoops made that decision when WVU literally ran his defense ragged with the HUNH in that bowl game in the mid 2000's.
