Thanksgiving: it was always meeting up with family in Baton Rouge for lunch. Small house, big extended family, always a lot of fun.
Christmas Eve: Seafood gumbo and wassail. My mom wasn't a great cook, she never used the same recipe for whatever reason, but it was always delicious. By the time I was 13 or 14, I didn't give a crap about the presents anymore, I just looked forward to seafood gumbo and wassail.
Wassail, recipie.
For those of unfamiliar with Wassail, it's an apple cider boiled with oranges pierced by cloves and cinnamon sticks (you can add rum if you want, I don't just because I think it ruins the flavor).
The Christmas Eve tradition of seafood gumbo and Wassail married my Louisiana and Dutch lineages, I've always thought it was pretty cool and something that I've continued as an adult.
