Twitter was a very poorly run public company the last several years it was traded. It wasn't really run as a typical company to maximize returns for shareholders, but rather as a political tool to promote left leaning ideas and to silence cons.
Musk then bought the company to run it in a more traditional sense, to extract value and make profits and return value to its owner.
Has Musk expressed his political views? I don't recall ever hearing about them. Given he's spent his entire career in California and now Austin, I strongly suspect he leans much more left than right.
