Why is drilling for oil bad but mining for cobalt and lithium isn't?

Can someone explain this to me? I know a fair amount about drilling for hydrocarbons, but I'm not familiar at all with mining for cobalt and lithium. From what I can tell, it seems like it is horrible for the environment. Am I wrong?

Also, what type of machinery do they use to mine cobalt and lithium? I'm assuming they're powered by fossil fuels.
