AUSTIN — Texas isn’t giving up in its dogged pursuit of an offensive coordinator. And now even the school president is part of the recruiting pitch.
UT source confirmed president Greg Fenves, athletic director Mike Perrin and football coach Charlie Strong all were scheduled to fly to Oklahoma on Friday night in hopes of reaching an agreement with Tulsa’s Sterlin Gilbert to revive the Longhorns’ abysmal offense. The trip was first reported by Orangebloods.

One of the wildest days in assistant-coaching-search history began with multiple local and national outlets reporting Gilbert and UT had reached a deal. But Friday afternoon, those same outlets reported Gilbert had turned the Longhorns down and had elected to remain at Tulsa instead.

Because this was the second time this week a candidate removed his name from consideration — TCU’s Sonny Cumbie spurned the Longhorns on Wednesday — UT found itself fighting the perception that panic was setting in. Friday afternoon, Fenves took the curious step of posting a Twitter message pledging his support of Strong, and a spokesman later confirmed the tweet was a response to online rumors about Fenves not assisting Strong in the coordinator search.
