Today's Gift (4-20)

A mighty oak and a thin reed argued about their strengths. In a fierce wind, the reed leaned with each gust and survived, while the oak stood unmoving and was uprooted.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ An Aesop fable
This poor old fable has been translated, interpreted (and misinterpreted), and altered for centuries. We could change the "facts" a little bit, pummel these two with days of torrential rain mixed with some hail, then discuss how the poor reed was driven into the ground, while the oak remained upright and stout. A more up-to-date and relatable version might be a song written a few years ago by Don Schlitz (no, really, that's his name), entitled The Gambler. Made a little money for Kenny Rogers too. The simple lesson was "...know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em...'cause every hand's a winner and every hand's a loser...."
No single trait is completely strong or completely weak. Being flexible and willing to accommodate change may make us more understanding and compassionate, but if we bend too far and too often, we'll forget who we really are. Being tall and strong as we stand on principle is admirable and often necessary, unless it deprives us of our ability to listen and be responsive. All of us harbor both of these sets of traits; the trick lies in knowing how and when to use each of them. Or as Don and Kenny told us, "...knowin' what to throw away and knowin' what to keep." Yep, and when.
Blessings all on this great Saturday.
* Texas Longhorn football fans attending the Saturday spring game should know coach Steve Sarkisian is approaching it like an NFL preseason game. Sarkisian’s goal is to exit this spring with minimal injuries, which means he does not intend to risk the health of his players. As a result, I was told Sarkisian intends to limit the reps for his key starters on Saturday.
* Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers is not expected to play a lot, according to multiple people. I was told Ewers will start on Saturday and before hitting the sidelines during the spring game. One person told me Sarkisian believes Ewers is playing at an extremely high level, and the coach does not need to see anything else from his starting quarterback this spring. Ewers’ pitch count number will be low.
* I was told EDGE Barryn Sorrell and cornerback Jahdae Barron’s reps will be limited, too. In addition, I learned there will be a heavy dose of backup players participating in the scrimmage.
* One person told me Sarkisian wants to see a heavy dose of Arch Manning and Trey Owens on Saturday. Sarkisian recently said Manning had his best spring practice on Tuesday. He wants to continue that momentum with a lot of reps for Manning this weekend. I was told Sarkisian’s goal is to continue working with Manning throughout the offseason to have a solid backup behind Ewers during the regular season.
* Clearly, Longhorn fans are keeping an eye on the weather to determine if rain will alter Sarkisian’s plans for Saturday’s scrimmage. As of Thursday afternoon, I was told alternative plans had not been discussed. If a change needs to be made, that decision will not be made until Friday afternoon, according to my sources. Everyone inside the building is in a holding pattern.
* Texas offensive lineman redshirt freshman Trevor Goosby fully participated in practice on Thursday. It was the first time Goosby practiced since sustaining a concussion last week.
* Longhorn sophomore running back C.J. Baxter struggled in practice on Thursday. I was told Baxter fumbled twice during live periods. The team was in shorts and not tackling, which frustrated the staff.
* Meanwhile, I was told Jaydon Blue was super explosive during Thursday’s practice. One person told me Blue has a remarkable ability to slow-play defenders by using a hesitation move before exploding for extra yards.
* Sarkisian rotated his receivers a lot during practice on Thursday. However, I was told Ryan Wingo and Matthew Golden were the most notable players in practice. Multiple people told me Golden had a spectacular one-handed catch in the corner of the end zone. The ball was not thrown perfectly but Golden adjusted to make a spectacular catch. Overall, Golden has one of the standouts this spring, according to multiple sources.
* In addition, Wingo received a lot of first-team reps as the X-receiver. I was told not to be surprised if Wingo is competing to start during training camp.
* Sarkisian’s receivers played multiple positions during practice on Thursday. Johntay Cook II and Isaiah Bond worked a lot in the slot.
* One person told me Texas intends to put a full-court press on former Arizona defensive tackle Bill Norton when he visits campus this weekend. Multiple people associated with the program are concerned about the defensive tackle position and believe Norton could provide an upgrade. I was told the addition of Norton could allow Alfred Collins to play the 5-technique or 3-technique. The people I spoke with believe the addition of Norton would instantly improve the defensive line room.
* Spoke with a source today heading into the spring game about the interest in transfer interior DL prospects, and how things have been going with the guys on campus lately on the defensive side of the trenches. The long and short of it is that many around the team have come to feel through spring ball that the interior DL -- even the starters -- haven't really lived up to expectations coming into the spring period.
* I expect Texas to be almost hyper-active in the DL transfer market here in the second window. Not only for depth, but also for players who could indeed push to start over guys like Vernon Broughton and, probably to a lesser degree, Alfred Collins. They are "looking to take 2-3 DTs," the person texted as it relates to interior DL transfer additions.
* Arizona transfer Bill Norton will be on campus this weekend, so obviously that will be one to watch closely, but I was also told that Texas likes its chances with UCLA grad transfer DT Jay Toia (pronounced toe-EE-uh) who announced on Thursday he would be entering the transfer portal. It was news that those who cover UCLA referred to as a "huge blow" as the Bruins lose their "best defensive linemen and top run-stuffer." I was told that Toia "is a Nansen guy" and he is connected to Nansen through their shared time at UCLA (2021) and also Toia's recruitment.
*****
* As a follow-up to what Alex just reported above, I can confirm that there is definite interest in Toia, but nothing is certain with regards to where Toia will end up.
* I've also been told that the Longhorns will be very aggressive in the Portal. You can almost assume that if a good interior defensive lineman becomes available, Texas will be interested.
* Keep an eye on that Punter market in the Portal. It's a need. Keep an eye on Notre Dame's Bryce McFerson, who went into the Portal today. He averaged 45.1 ypd for the Irish last season, but has three seasons of eligibility remaining.
* I was able to confirm that TCU DT Damonic Williams will visit Texas next week on April 23-24 after visiting Oklahoma this weekend. Colorado (4/26) and LSU (4/30 also have visits set up, while Missouri and Oregon are in the mix as well.
* A note from the TexasOne Fund: "We have limited inventory of seats for the inaugural Horns Up signature fundraising event celebrating the University of Texas student-athletes. A Night for Texas will be hosted by actor, comedian, and producer Shane Gillis and feature music from Ryan Bingham and the Texas Gentlemen and headliner Brooks & Dunn on May 18. Join Coach Sark, CDC, Texas Coaches, and our Texas student-athletes on the 50-yard line of Campbell-Williams Field at DKR for this star-studded event.
While the inventory lasts, for $2,500, you can join us for this unforgettable experience, all while supporting Texas student-athletes. In addition, we have a few foursomes available for the Texas One Fund Golf Classic with Coach Sark on May 17 at The University of Golf Club. It’s set to be another big recruiting weekend for the Longhorns (the third in a row) as Texas is set to host the Orange-White game. Weather could alter some of these plans and regional track meets around the state are also set for Friday and Saturday, so that’s cutting into some players’ schedules. Let’s take a look at some of the top players who have confirmed their plans to be in attendance for the spring game …
QB KJ Lacey – Saraland (AL) – The Texas QB commitment has been a regular visitor to the UT campus over the last year and he’s supposed to be back in town this weekend. Schools like Auburn and Oregon continue to work on him and Lacey did take in an Auburn practice this spring, but this one still feels like it’s pretty well locked in for the Longhorns.
QB Keelon Russell – Duncanville – This will be an interesting visit to track. When we last spoke to Russell, he was pretty excited about this visit to get some time with the Texas coaches and to ultimately see if a UT offer might be presented. He reconfirmed his visit plans with OB this week so the trip is still on. He’s committed to SMU, he’s already taken an OV to Ole Miss and he has a Florida OV set for June. How strongly would he consider the Longhorns should Texas offer? Would he mind coming in with KJ Lacey? He says he’d definitely consider it and we might start to get some answers this weekend if that offer does come through.
RB James Simon – Shreveport (LA) Calvary Baptist Academy – Everyone’s been hyper-focused on Jordon Davison, for good reason, but don’t sleep on Simon. He holds a Texas offer. He’s already taken multiple visits to UT. LSU already has two running backs committed, including 5-star Harlem Berry. Schools like Notre Dame, Texas A&M and a couple others are involved there but this is one we should be watching pretty closely.
WR Kelshaun Johnson – Hitchcock – If UT is going to have a recruiting event, there’s a good chance Johnson will be in attendance. That’s the case again this weekend. Arkansas, Penn State and Texas Tech are in the mix, but this one likely comes down to either Texas or Southern Cal. The repeated trips to Austin are tough to ignore.
WR Michael Terry – Alamo Heights – Terry picked up a Texas offer earlier this year but things have been pretty quiet since then. He does have a few official visits on the calendar but nothing to Texas yet. If he does make it to Austin on Saturday, it’ll be interesting to get his thoughts on where things stand following this trip.
WR Andrew Marsh – Katy Jordan (maybe) – Marsh told OB on Thursday that his plans for this weekend are up in the air and he’s waiting to talk to his mother to confirm their schedule. If he shows up, that’ll be his second visit to UT this spring. Marsh has several official visits scheduled, including one for UT in June, and a decision won’t come until late in the fall.
TE Emaree Winston – Calhoun (GA) – The Texas commitment is coming in for a three-day visit. We’ll catch up with Winston soon to see how things go, but every time we’ve talked to him, he’s been completely locked in with his UT pledge.
OL Ty Haywood – Denton Ryan – This one probably needs to go into the “maybe” category. Haywood told us back at the UnderArmour camp in Dallas that he’d be visiting Texas for the spring game, but his plans tend to change and it seems like the UT staff is prioritizing some other players above him. If he does visit, it’ll be his first trip to the Forty Acres.
OL Nicolai Brooks – Cedar Rapids (IA) Kennedy – Texas is in the top six for the former Iowa commitment and Rivals250 member. This visit is step one of what would probably need to be a several step process for Texas to win this race, but Brooks is scheduled to be back in Austin in June for an official visit. OVs to Iowa and USC are also on the books.
DE Lance Jackson – Texarkana Pleasant Grove – The Texas DE commitment is completely locked in with his decision. He’s not looking to visit anywhere else and would probably sign with Texas tomorrow if he could.
DE Derry Norris Jr. – Port Orange (FL) Spruce Creek – Texas offered Norris in March and he immediately said he would be getting to Austin for a visit. He has a fairly packed schedule of official visits set for June. Let’s see if Texas talks to him this weekend about finding a date to get him back to Austin for an OV in the summer.
DT Zion Williams – Lufkin – Williams was in Austin two weekends ago and said he’ll be back for the game on Saturday. Williams is one who changes his plans frequently (he was supposed to be at LSU last weekend but cancelled that one) so we’ll see if he actually shows up to Austin. The Longhorns are in a strong position in this one.
DT Chace Sims – Richmond Randle – He holds a UT offer and has Texas in his top five after visiting a couple of weeks ago. Texas hasn’t schedule an official visit with him so we’ll see if anything changes after this visit.
LB Bo Barnes – Dallas Skyline – He’s a new Texas commitment but this dude seems about as locked in as one could possibly be. He was on campus on Saturday for UT’s scrimmage and he’ll be back in town this weekend.
LB Riley Pettijohn – McKinney – Any time you can get Pettijohn on campus, it’s a big development. He’s had this trip in the works for a while and re-confirmed his plans to be in Austin when we checked on Thursday. Schools like Texas A&M, Ohio State and Florida State are in the hunt but the Longhorns are believed to be leading the pack. This weekend should only solidify UT’s lofty standing.
LB Nasir Wyatt – Mater Dei – He’s a guy that might be tough to pull from the West Coast but Texas has had success at Mater Dei. Let’s see if the UT staff can get an official visit set up during this weekend’s trip.
LB Jonathan Cunningham – North Crowley – He visited Texas last Thursday. He’ll be back on Saturday and he already has a UT official visit set up for mid-June. OVs to TCU and Arizona State are also on the schedule. This feels like one Texas can win if the staff continues to push.
P/K Scott Starzyk – The Woodlands – He’s ranked by Kohl’s kicking as the No. 1 kicker in the nation and the No. 2 punter. He’s taken visits to places like Ohio State, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Memphis and Alabama this spring. I’m keeping an eye on this one. Texas could very well take a kicker in this cycle and Starzyk might be the guy.
WR Dakorien Moore – Duncanville (maybe) – We’ll put him on the list because he’s said he’ll probably be there, but regional track obligations might make it tough for him to get to Austin. The official visits in June will be the bigger visits in this one. Moore continues to say publicly he’s locked in with LSU, but Texas, Oregon and Ohio State aren’t going away.
ATH Wayne Shanks – CY Woods (2027)
Blue's Hands
One characteristic that set Bijan Robinson apart was that he had a wide receiver's hands out of the backfield and added a special dimension to the offense.
Jaydon Blue's hands are right there with Bijan's. He made a tough snag on that throw for the touchdown in the first half today. And going back to the playoff game against Washington, the difficult grab he made going out of bounds on the final drive, although short yardage, moved the ball while stopping the clock.
Together with his running ability, Blue's pass-catching dexterity will add be a key element to the offense this season.
OT: Cool story about when Henry Clay met the Duke of Wellington (victor over Napoleon at Waterloo)
From Harlow Giles Unger's excellent book Henry Clay: America's Greatest Statesman. Love these kinds of historical anecdotes:
[John Quincy] Adams, Clay, and the others had signed the peace treaty with England [ending the War of 1812] on December 24, 1814, and although Clay longed to return home, the President asked him to remain overseas and join Adams and Treasury Secretary Gallatin in London for negotiations scheduled for April of a new commercial treaty with the British. Clay spent the next three months exploring and carousing in Paris and parts of France with American ambassador William H. Crawford, a former Georgia senator. Virginia-born like Clay, Crawford had grown close to Clay while they were members of the Ghent peace commission—often irritating Puritan John Quincy Adams with their raucous all-night drinking bouts. Crawford took pleasure introducing Clay to Paris life—by day and night. Clay met Paris luminaries at the court of Louis XVIII and at fashionable salons.
Far from Denny’s Department store in Richmond, Virginia, the former errand boy displayed the gallantry of Kentucky’s storied land barons by kissing the hand of French writer Madame de Staël, the daughter of the renowned Swiss banker -- statesman Jacques Necker. Clay met her extensive social set, including the Duke of Wellington, by then legendary as victor over Napoléon at Waterloo .
When Madame de Staël told Clay the British had contemplated sending the Duke to America during the War of 1812, Clay tried to be clever. “I am very sorry, Madam, that they did not send his grace. ”
“And why , Sir?” Madame de Staël asked.
“Because if he had beaten us, we should only have been in the condition of all Europe, without disgrace. But if we had been so fortunate as to beat the Duke, we should have added greatly to the renown of our arms.”
Later, when Madame de Staël introduced Wellington to Clay and repeated the American’s remark, the equally glib Wellington had a ready riposte: “If I had been sent on that errand and been so fortunate to be successful against so gallant a foe as the Americans, I should have regarded it as the proudest feather in my cap. ”
