Regents Approve $70M UT Tower Renovations

I was walking around campus last week and noticed the tower has become very worn. Glad the Regents are stepping up! Can't wait to see renderings of what it will look like.

Is there anything more maddening than trying to call a local government bureaucracy?

Will spare you the details. To complicated and will just make me pull my hair out.

But I swear there is nothing as maddening as trying to get information from a local government bureaucracy. They seem to only employ one person and seventeen voice recordings. After each recording assures you that your call is important to them it refers you to another number which is a recording and so forth though about four recording. None have a prompt for who you are trying to reach or why. Then you finally find yourself referred to a directory. The directory asks you for the name of the person you are trying to reach. Hell, I don't know their name and don't care. I just want to talk to someone in the xxxx department. After 30 minutes on the phone when I can't provide a name I am referred back to recording number one to start over. It assures me my call is important to them.
Seriously? Is this the best we can do these days? Why do they even bother? And why do we pay any of the people responsible for these systems 10 cents over minimum wage? It is truly bat shit crazy! I am convinced they do this on purpose. They don't want to talk to you. And your call is NOT important to them or they would hire a staff that could actually help you.

Rant over! :mad:

Visiting One World Trade Center w/ a 4 year old

We're taking our 4 year old to NYC in two weeks and want to take him to the top of WTT which neither of us have ever done. They offer a few experiences/times but just wanted to see if anyone had strong feelings about the various options they offer.

Any other fun things for a small kid his first time I'm happy to hear as well. Staying up at the park, gonna hit up MoNH, FAO Schwartz etc and then just some fun dinners. Since he's young and it's his first time we're not trying to cram too much in.

Texas BASEBALL - How SWEEP it is! - Game Recap

FINAL
Texas - 7
Cal Poly - 0

Winning Pitcher: Cody Howard (2-0)
Losing Pitcher: Ryan Baum (0-2)
BOX SCORE

RECAP:
For the first time since 2002 against UT-Pan American, the Longhorns swept a team and did not allow a single run. Prior to that, the Horns had not accomplished the feat since 1971 at SMU. That is it. That is the entirety of the times that the Horns have played a three game series and not given up a single run. While this pitching staff certainly cannot be compared to the 2002 squad that had Justin Simmons, Alan Bomer, Brad Halsey, and Huston Street, and oh by the way, won the national title, this staff has placed their mark in Texas history. Cody Howard got his first start of the season and turned in a 5 inning performance, giving up zero runs, while scattering 7 hits and striking out 3. He did that in just 67 pitches, which is some nice efficiency and something to build on. Max Grubbs was not his sharpest as his fastball and slider were up, but he gave up just one hit in the scoreless inning he pitched. Gage Boehm continues to be a workhorse out of the bullpen and for good reason, striking out two and giving up just a single hit. Freshman Easton Tumis finished off the last two innings of the game, giving up no hits, walking one batter, and striking out two, including the last batter of the afternoon.

While the offense did not set any records this weekend, they were yeoman like in their work, grinding out at-bats until they got the breakthroughs and taking advantage of some timely hitting. On Sunday, Peyton Powell again led the way hitting a solo home run in the Bottom of the 3rd to plate the games first run. Max Belyeu hit an oppo taco (opposite field home run) for the second day in a row to double the Horns advantage in the Bottom 6th. In the Bottom of the 7th, it was that guy Powell again who blasted a 2 run shot to RF scoring lead off man Jared Thomas. Shortly thereafter Jalin Flores got in on the action, belting a home run to left CF over the Yeti Yard and into the street. When Flores is able to get extension, watch out, as he has some serious power in that 6'2" frame. Then in the Bottom of the 8th, Jared Thomas lead off with a double and ended up scoring after back to back wild pitches to make it 6-0 Texas. The Horns finished out the scoring in the Bottom of the 8th when Rylan Galvan hit a laser to CF, driving in Jalin Flores.

In all, you could not ask for a much better day at the ballpark with temps in the mid 80s. This weekend was a good way to build some confidence in the Texas pitching staff and highlight the areas that need work still.

BIG MOMENT:
While I could go with one of the two home runs by Peyton Powell, I am going to highlight the defensive play by the trio of Porter Brown, Jalin Flores, and Rylan Galvan. In the Top 6th inning, lead off man Jake Steels singled through the left side, bringing Coach Pierce out to the mound to replace starter Cody Howard. Grubbs got the first batter he faced to hit a long fly ball to Porter Brown in LF. Catcher Ryan Stafford then hit a ball into the LF corner, in which Jake Steels tried to go from 1st to home on. The problem for Jake is that Porter got to the ball and fired off a dart to Jalin Flores who handled the relay with gusto, firing off a bullet to Rylan Galvan that was perfectly placed to get the tag down on Steels who was sliding into home. That defensive play kept Cal Poly off the board and absolutely crushed their momentum. Game. BLOUSES!

INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE:

Peyton Powell. He has that dawg in him. He finished the night 4-5, with 2 HRs, 2 runs scored, and 3 RBIs. Oh and he continues to play stellar defense at 3B. Not too shabby!

TAKEAWAYS:
The starting pitching from Texas this weekend was outstanding. They need to take what they did and carry it over and continue to build on it. The bullpen wasn't perfect at times, but they got the job done and there are some dudes emerging, that Coach Pierce and the staff know they can turn to at any time. Offensively, the Horns have one of the best 1-2 punches in the nation at the top of the lineup. Jalin Flores continues to show what he is capable of and Max Belyeu has gotten his confidence back after pressing a bit too much. The Horns also got to play some guys to help build depth. A great example is two freshman in Dee Kennedy and Casey Borba. Coach Pierce mentioned after the game that they came to campus nervous, but they have made massive strides and are going to contribute heavily this season. Likewise, the Horns have several freshman that they believe can be real contributors out of the bullpen, Easton Tumis being one of them. There is still plenty of work to do and things to clean up (walks, base running, and offensively getting some guys going), BUT the important thing is that the Horns improved to 6-1 on the season with one final home game before heading to Houston where the competition will take a massive jump.

Tuesday Night Baseball v. St. John's (2-2) at 630pm

Today's Gift (2-26)

The readiness is all.
~~~~~~~~~~ Shakespeare, Hamlet
Hamlet was a big believer in divine providence, so the way he saw it, only God's will could determine the hour of one's death. Accordingly, the best we can do is simply accept it, and be ready for it. Such discussions are above my pay grade on a Monday morning, but there may be something to this readiness idea. We can't, for example, force family harmony into our lives, but perhaps we can become more ready to be harmonious. We can't make a lasting love magically appear on command, but are there things we can do to become ready for such a relationship when the opportunity comes along?
Today, let's look around at the changes we'd like to see, and ask ourselves how we can become ready for them.
Blessings, lads and lasses.
Lamont Paris
My guess is 98% of the board has no clue who he is. But he’s HC for South Carolina hoops. Will be interesting to see how their current outstanding season ends and how he follows it up next season. BTW he and South Carolina choked the f*ck outta Ole Piss in Oxford this past weekend. Maybe a name to squirrel away since HC speculation is a 24/7 vocation on OB.
Texas BASEBALL v. Cal Poly - Sunday Game Thread
AWOS - Always Win on Sunday. Since Coach Pierce has been at Texas, that has been the mantra. Regardless of what has occurred over the weekend, if you win on Sunday, you can either salvage a win, win the series, or complete the sweep.
Today, the Horns are looking for a sweep, which would be their first of the young season. While sweeping a Cal Poly is the expectation and should be the norm, this is the game of ”amateur” baseball and winning can never be taken for granted. Baseball can be a cruel mistress and at the college level can be extremely unpredictable. Just take a look at some of the chaos that has occurred this season, nothing is given. Jared Thomas said that they came out yesterday with a bit of an edge after getting shut down on Friday night. They will need to come out with that same edge and work hard to get an early lead and then quickly build upon that momentum.
Here are the things I will be watching for today from the Horns.
  • How does Cody Howard look as the Sunday starter. Yes, he started several intersquad games during the Fall and Spring, but I want to see how he performs when the proverbial lights are on. For Howard, setting a tone early today goes a long way towards preparing himself for a potential start against top 10 Vanderbilt next weekend in Houston.
  • Assuming they are in the lineup, I want to see Jack O’Dowd and Porter Brown with better at-bats. Last season Brown was so dangerous due in large part to his ability to go deep in counts and work a walk or make something happen. He is still getting deep in counts, but then he is chasing up and outside. For Jack, the expectation is not that he will suddenly be a .330+ hitter, but I want to see the maturity and confidence that we saw at the plate the last few weekends last season.
  • Bullpen. So far, the Horns have only used three players out of the pen (Boehm, Fontenot, and Shaw). I want to see guys like Selvig, Hamilton, Tumis, and Grubbs get some action, even if it is just for three outs. Their growth is paramount to this seasons success and frankly future seasons.
  • Offensively, I want to see the entire team do better in 0-2 counts and continue to work on the base running.
