Greatest upset victory in TX history.
NB was in the middle of a 4 year run where they won the nc 3 out of 4 years. This was the first year of the Big XII and this was the first title game. It was played in St. Louis.
TX was only 7/4 that season and we lost on the last play in 3 of those games. But we won our last 4 and finally had some momentum. NB was 10/1 that season they lost an early season game to AZS but they came in with a full head of steam and with a victory they would have played for a 3rd straight title. They were favored by 21.
But TX qb James Brown felt disrespected. He said that TX would win by 21. My father and I watched the game together and we had a good feeling about this one. TX got the opening kickoff and scored. Throughout the game TX controlled the tempo. With NB ahead 27/23 JB hit Wane Mcgarity on a bomb to take the lead. TX gets the ball back and it's 4th and 2 on our 28 yard line. Mackovic decides to go for it. At first it looks like they're going to run up the middle. But James Brown rolls out and looks like he's going to run for it but then he throws the ball to Derek Lewis who runs for 61 yards to the NB 11. Priest Holmes scores on the next play and we were up 10. NB gets the ball back but they fumbled and we run out the clock.
A lot of guys played the best game of their careers in that game. Octavius Bishop, James Brown, and especially Priest Holmes. We had a guy who was making tackles all over the field but I can't remember who. We had one of the best offenses in longhorn history that year. We had 3 great rbs that year Priest, Ricky, and Shon Mitchell. We had 2 sold receivers that year Adams and Mcgarity. Pat Fitzgerald was as good a te as we've ever had. And we had a really good ol led by Dan Neil as good an og as I've seen at TX. We had St. Phil Dawson as a kicker. We also had an outstanding secondary 2 of them went on to play in the NFL for a few years. Most of all we had James Brown at qb. Over the last 45 years I consider him as the 3rd best qb in TX history only Vince and Colt are ahead of him. He was a leader and he was a real leader that day.
A funny story about that 4th down play. Derek Lewis one of the real characters to play at TX slowed down to watch himself running on the jumbo tron. If you can find the video you can see it for yourself. Fortunately we scored on the next play.
That 4th down pass ranks up there as one of the greatest plays in longhorn history right up there with Vince's game winning td in the RB. Right now we really need to remember some of the great moments in longhorn history.
