It's the same but different now. With the new rule changes, it's actually more difficult to tackle. I know that sounds crazy-- but it will be another 20 years or so before this new style of tackling fully takes hold. As it stands, there are coaches my age that still teach kids how to tackle with the same "approach" that would allow you to still take a guys head off or blow a guy up. Let's be honest, the crowd doesn't jump to their feet after you rugby tackle a guy coming over the middle on a quick slant. They jump to their feet when you plant his ass like a rose bush for coming over the middle.
Man screw all this. Let's start playing like the Oakland Raiders when they were at their peak. By that I mean cheap shots yeah that's right I said it. The Raider mantra was cheating is encouraged. By that I mean you did what you have to do to get the job done. If you can do it within the rules great but if you can't than don't worry about the penalty we'll deal with it.
I advocate on the upcoming season that within the first 10 plays of the game the other teams qb must go down and he must go down hard. Shawn Rogers who was a dt for us about 20 years ago did that all the time and the penalties he got called for never bothered him. Oh btw he played 10 years in the NFL even made a couple of Pro Bowls. That's how the game should be played!!!
That doesn't mean you do what Jalen Green did against KSU. That was just plain stupid it was right in front of the zebra a blind man could have made that call. But then again we had a pretty dumb secondary last year. You've got to know when to do it.
You always go for their star receiver first. If you can knock that f****er out of the game great. It doesn't mean you will win but he will be on the sidelines and will have no impact on the game which is what you want. The great NFL dc Buddy Ryan believed that when you intercept the ball the other 10 guys should make a beeline forthe qb he said not to worry about a pick6. I like that. I doubt if he'll get hit but I guarantee he'll be spooked the rest of the game.
I would like to see our dl do more undercuts to the nuts of the other teams ol. And hit them in the throat a couple of times for good measure.
I'm telling ya this is what the Raiders did and they won SB's playing this way and some of those guys are in the HoF. Hey it's how Pittsburgh steel curtain played and they also won SB and had plenty of HoF players as well. Hey it's what Gary Patterson's teams do. Just watch film on the TCU d if you don't believe it. Ever wondered why TCU's is ranked first in the Big XII every year? Finally it's not hard to learn how to play this way. Our d isn't very smart and you know that's right. Let's make it simple enough that even they can understand it. And besides they get called for so many penalties I think let's try to turn into a positive way for us. My .02 worth and
