Well, we didn't get Spring Practice and didn't get a Spring Game but there is a still a chance we get to see football in the fall. So, here is what I see. Disagreements/thoughts/etc. are welcome!

Offense

All-American candidate - 1

Sam Ehlinger. That doesn't mean I think he will be an All-American, but he certainly has the pedigree to be considered going into the season.

But only having one is a sad

Big-12 candidate - 3

Obviously Sam

Keaontay Ingram. 1500 yards in two years and 5.5/rush is something to build on. He has a real shot to have a breakout junior season with health.

Sam Cosmi. Really took a step back last season. Maybe he was injured? But he did have a very good Alamo Bowl, so hopefully that is something to build on!

Only 3 Big-12 type players is alarming

Solid Starter - 8

Ehlinger, Ingram and Cosmi obviously

Brennan Eagles. Caught 32 for just over 500 yards as the #3 WR. He is big and fast and time for him to step up as a go to against anyone. Need more games like he had vs. LSU (5-116-1).

Jake Smith. 25 catches as a freshman is very solid. 6 TDs is outstanding as a freshman. Can work on his YAC. Hopefully with more targets he will have a solid year.

Cade Brewer. 11 catches last year. He needs to be more apart of the offense. Hopefully the new OC can do that. Solid pass receiver and decent blocker.

Junior Angilau. Started 12 games as a RSF. Didn't receive any accolades, but was very solid on the interior. Starting 12 as a RSF is a good sign. Look for some serious growth this year.

Derek Kerstetter. He has probably hit his ceiling talent wise. Don't envision him being a All-Conference type, but that doesn't mean he can't be solid on the front. 28 starts in his career. His experience is invaluable.

Question Marks - 3

WR - who is going to be the replacement for Duv opposite of Eagles? Eagles/Smith are a nice combo, but we need an outside receiver to step up to play opposite Eagels' side. Candidates - Epps, Lewis, Washington, Woodard.

RT - Who is going to be the full time RT? Candidates - Johnson, Tyler, Moore, Hookfin, Jones.

C - Who is going to take over for Shack? This is a HUGE loss and area of concern. C, to me, is the most important position on the OL, with LT coming in a close 2nd. Candidates - Ghirmai, Majors, ????

Quality Back-ups - 4

RoJo, Young, Whittington, Epps

There better be a LOT of development happen and quick. You have to replace your top 2 receivers, your C and find quality back-ups in a number of spots. How good is our back-up QB? I have no idea.

If Texas has an All American on offense, it won't be Ehlinger, it will be Cosmi. He is by far the best player on offense. Remind me what makes you think Sam took a step back last year? He graded out to be one of the best linemen in college football last year. There were a lot of factors that lead to a decline in Oline play, but none of them were Sam Cosmi.

Ehlinger is going to be good, and probably great, but when you have guys out there like Trevor Lawrence and the kid from Ohio State it's going to take a Joe Burrow season to be an All American.

Sam is going to have some weapons to work with, from the 3 headed monster we have at Running Back to all the returning receivers, expect the Texas offense to be outstanding.

The only real question is the offensive line. I feel good about 3 of the 5 spots, including Cosmi, Angelu, and Kerrstetter, but after those guys is a big bunch of questions. We basically need two guys to step up and let us move Kerrstetter to Center position. We have a few guys that can do it, but without a spring it's going to be tough on us to find them. I expect us to lean on Okafur even if he isn't the best guy because he is very experienced and knows what he is doing.

The one guy I think can be a real difference maker for the offense is Jared Wiley. He is huge and strong, he is a guy that can be a true TE as in both an elite blocker and pass catcher. I think the last time we had one of them was Bo Scaife. Even Dave Thomas was much more of a receiver than a blocker. Wiley has the chance to be elite as both a blocker and receiver.

Ehlinger was on the list of Heisman hopefuls deep into the season. I would say that most certainly is justification to think he is AA worthy.

Cosmi - where did you see these grades? He was our best OL (him and Shack), but he was nowhere near AA level -- not even close. I flirted with putting him up top with Ehlinger. Maybe I'm being too harsh, but I saw him get beat more this past year and year one. His punch looked off. His feet looked slow, but most of that was in the middle of the year. His Alamo Bowl was outstanding and what I expect we'll see this year. He could be one of the first 5 OTs taken in 2021 and why he was on my list of potential 1st round draft picks. Not bad for a 3* and 107th OT in the 2017 class, lol.

"Meet the new boss, same as the old boss". It isn't a bad thing, but I see no glaring difference in the identity of our new offense except total plays and total yards-which is huge if we can match those numbers.

Ohio State had the #1 offense in college football last year, all I care about is if Texas can break into the top 10 in total offense. We do that and Texas will win 10 games next year. We get better defensive play and Texas can go undefeated.

How does not having spring practice effect the players having to learn a new defensive scheme and a new offensive scheme? Kind of a bad year to have to install new stuff.

That is good news. I am assuming he is not a speedster. Do we have any speedsters in our WR corps?

If you're asking if we have a Ruggs, Lamb, Jefferson, Reagor, or Jeudy...no, I don't think we do.

If you're asking if we have some guys that have the ability to go 50+ on a straight line catch and throw, then yes, we have a couple.

Eagles is 6-4 and listed at 230. He is a matchup problem. He probably runs a mid 4.5 40. Certainly fast enough to make things happen, but he isn't going to break away from press coverage with straight line speed. He needs to crisp up his breaks to get to the next level.

Jake Smith is one of our fastest receivers, maybe the fastest. He is surely low 4.4, maybe high 4.3. He can catch and get vertical in a hurry and has the top end speed to make big things happen. Gained a ton of experience last year, which is key into beating zone and finding holes.

Kelvontay Dixon is a speedster but very green. Who knows if he will develop or not.

Pretty much everyone else is a high 4.5 guy or 4.6 guy. But guys like Whittington, Woodard, and Washington could be very good receivers. Whittington doesn't have the top end speed, but he is a play maker and gamer. I think he will be very good if he stays healthy.

Does anyone know what kind of shape, recovery-wise, that Whittingtion is from his groin surgery (percentagewise)?

There's no way to tell. You can test yourself all the live long day in the weight room and doing agility drills, but the only way to know if he has properly healed is to put him in the pads. And we don't have that opportunity.

True, but some kind of update on his progress would be nice. I'm wondering if there is any chance that he may not play again?

speedsters?....Jake Smith says hi...
I didn’t know he was that fast. I thought he was a possession type receiver with decent speed. I really like Smith. He will be a good one, hopefully a great one.

I liked the article on Brainiacs last year. The reporter said...."Jake Smith is fast.....like the fastest kid in the world fast"....

It turned out he was not as fast as Durnenay…..but not by much. kid is fast.

hell, watch the films. When he catches he just outruns everybody.

As he learns defenses he will play faster to match his shorts/tshirt speed. I'm very excited about him.

The idea of Eagles/Smith/Whittington/Brewer or Wiley is very exciting!

Or if you go 10 personnel...Eagles/Smith/Whitt/Black with Sam and RoJo/Ingram in the backfield.

This offense could surpass last years numbers. Just need a C and RT, lol.

Add Tarik Black to the offense. 25 catches at Michigan. Big and athletic. Was #15 WR out of HS and #117 overall player in the nation back in 2017.

Will add some nice depth on the outside.

At least we got a transfer from a winning program this time. I mean Georgia Tech, a sub 500 ST team, and Rice. Rice!!!

True, but both of those guys you mentioned were much needed at the time. Anderson from Rice was very good for us. Braun was good, but a bit of a disappointment IMO.

Here's what upsets me. This grad transfer bit is starting to get like free agency in professional sports. The elite schools are getting players from other elite schools. OK, tOSU, and GA, are playing this game especially well. We're going to have to start doing the same.
