247 Reports Orlando under consideration for SMU

Herman claims Orlando didn’t interview and that if Orlando did interview he would know about it. But when asked how long he expects to keep Orlando he said “hopefully next year st least”. Which seems to aknowlage the possibility of Orlando leaving. I imagine the reports of him interviewing are accurate despite whst Herman May say publicly.

Where did you see this quote by Herman and what was the date?

Don't believe everything you read on the internet folks. These coaches typically have language in their contract that makes them notify their employer they are interviewing for another job........

Not to mention the school interviewing the coach notifies the other school that they are interviewing their coach. If that wording makes sense lol.

Chip Brown is an SMU grad and he is trying to come off like he knows what's going down, it's what he does.

Truth

We can use Jim Leavitt as an example since he is likely a candidate for the FSU DC job.

FSU can pursue him, but due to his contract he can not interview or even leave until Oregon is done with the post season. Lawyers love to put fine print in these contracts.

Making sense and being reality are not one in the same. SMU is not a bad stepping stone, but it's better suited for an offensive mind.

This conference will make a DC look like garbage in a heartbeat, and when you factor in the guys you lose on defense I think it makes sense to leave.

Also have to take into consideration the offense leaving the defense on the field. I am not sure the offense is going to make a huge leap in productivity especially if you keep Beck.

Seems pretty risky to stick around as a DC in this league.

War Room:

If Texas defensive coordinator Todd Orlando is interested in the vacant head coaching position at SMU, he is not talking to anyone of importance about his interest.

We spoke to multiple key sources within the program on Thursday, and if Orlando did interview with SMU this week, nobody is aware of those discussions. We are still digging and talking to sources, but everyone we spoke with who is associated with the program said Orlando has assured them he has not spoken to anyone at SMU.
Not only did Orlando inform coworkers he had not spoken to anyone at SMU, the defensive coordinator told his players he is not interested in the job. In addition, he told them not to believe any report linking him to another job. Everyone we spoke with who is associated with the program believes Orlando will remain at Texas after this season.

Texas football coach Tom Herman was asked about Orlando’s reported interview by Austin American-Statesman reporter Brian Davis on Thursday and said, “Any assistant that’s going to interview for another job would tell me about it. ... I would’ve been the first to know if it were true.”

Orlando was at the home of Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas defensive end Nikolas Bonitto on Wednesday from 4 to 6:30 p.m. It is possible Orlando spoke with SMU officials before or after his visit to Florida. If so, it would have been an informal interview as opposed to an official conversation.

One person associated with Texas who I spoke to on Thursday told me losing a coach like Orlando is always a concern, and added, “These things change fast.” That person did not want to discount the possibility that there could be something going on behind the scenes nobody knows about.

While sourcing inside the Texas universe were reporting there was nothing to see as it relates to the ides of Orlando interviewing with SMU, we did speak with sources from outside the program who said Orlando did speak with SMU this week. They did not specify if the talks were informal, or elaborate on where they heard the information.

Regardless, if Orlando did leave the program after one season, it would be a major blow to this defense, and Longhorn players could be on their fourth defensive coordinator in the past two seasons (Vance Bedford, Charlie Strong and Orlando). It would also be a huge disappointment to Herman, who as of Thursday night was unaware of Orlando’s interest in coaching at SMU, and players who believe a coach who told them he was not going anywhere.
We will continue to dig and report any new information when available. (Richardson)

Hmmm. They didn't struggle on defense this year and it was not a down year for offense in the Big 12. Some teams in the Bog 12 simply struggle with fielding defense.

The offense is the problem, no doubt. But, that's not hurting the outlook on Orlando.

Orlando is a good DC, and he had some really good talent to work with. Losing Hill, Jefferson, Elliot, Ford, and possibly Omenihu is quite a bit to contend with.

I am just projecting how the offense could affect the defense next season. This season they were able to carry the load. Next season after losing all that talent is possibly a different story.

Teams lose players every year. Even yours.

Player maturity is a big reason those guys improved, not just scheme. Boyd and Davis with Thompson, etc. return at corner plus PJ, Jones, etc at safety. Charles isn't leaving.. Gary Johnson will be fine with Malik leaving. He still has lots of toys!

And I fully expect our offense to take a step backwards because of it.
Well that's refreshing. Usually the $ooner fanbase without fail predicts the ou replacements will be even better than the guys who left and UT players who left are always irreplaceble. Good on ya.

Our roster is a mess so we can't really next man up NFL caliber players at this point, so I agree the defense will probably take a step back. It wouldn't be stupid for Orlando to leave by any stretch, so it's really going to come down to what he wants to do. UT will give him a raise but it's probably not going to match HC money at SMU like programs. This isn't specific to SMU because we don't even know if he interviewed or if they would even offer, it's just hypothetical.

Chances are he is probably gone before this thing is rebuilt though. He's not going to be our DC forever and unless we hit the jackpot on some JUCOs or grad transfers our OL is going to be problematic for a couple more years at least.

NFL caliber players? Williams, is the only one who should enter the draft early... I won't be a bit surprised if Elliot, Hill, etc.. Go undrafted. 253 players and these fools are gonna rush in.

I agree. I don't think we can hold on to him past year three.

I think Charles O would go undrafted so he's not leaving unless he's an idiot. I think Elliot and Jefferson will be drafted just not early. They are still NFL players even if they don't go in the first three rounds. Hill I assume isn't coming back and risking getting kicked out of school for another failed test. Regardless it's not dumb to think there could be a drop off. We could still have a good D next year and there be a drop off.

I'm not trying to argue that Orlando needs to leave now while the iron is hot. Just that there are pros and cons to the argument. Him accepting an SMU like stepping stone wouldn't be foolish nor would staying. It really comes down to what he wants. One isn't a clear cut better career move at this point.

Again, it wasn't just scheme although it helped tremendously. Most of Elliot picks were right place right time situational play. Player maturity! This was Elliots first full season as a full blown starter. Malik had a breakout season, still needs work. Hill is a shutdown corner. Davis will be a senior, Boyd will be a senior, both players will improve. Gary Johnson is going to have a great season in 2018. I still see tons of upside!
