Jason Kersey, Oklahoma football writer for The Athletic, joined my podcast this week, and we had the ultimate Texas-OU discussion. I know you guys hate everything OU-related, but Kersey provided a lot of great insight. If you are craving a real football discussion, this is the podcast for you.
Here are the highlights:
- We began by talking about Jerry Stiller. Kersey is a huge Seinfeld fan, and he wrote a farewell to Frank Costanza on Monday.
- We discussed the quarterback competition between Spencer Rattler, Tanner Mordecai, and incoming freshman Chandler Morris. Kersey detailed the reasons why Rattler is will likely start this season, and how the lack of spring practice hurt Mordecai. He had a detailed story on The Athletic this week.
- Kersey recently interviewed the quarterback coaches of each player, including Kevin Murray, Kyler's father. He learned each quarterback has been working on themselves during the pandemic, and explained how they are progressing without a traditional setting.
- Kersey believes after Oklahoma opens against Missouri State, the following games against Tennessee, Army (on the road), Baylor, Texas and Iowa State is going to be a challenging start for the Sooners.
- When we a spirited discussion about Sam Ehlinger vs. Spencer Rattler. Kersey believes Rattler will finish his college career with more success, but thinks Ehlinger has the advantage going into this season. I explained the obvious reasons why I think this is Ehlinger's year.
- I asked Kersey if Oklahoma is vulnerable before of the lack of quarterback experience. Kersey said Oklahoma still has unanswered questions on defense. He pointed out that Oklahoma was so bad on defense two years ago, any improvement last season would be viewed as a success. He still wants to see more this season.
Those are just a few topics we discussed.
