Here you go:
- It did not take long for grad transfer running back Tre Watson to have an impact.
In fact, it took only one play.
Watson was finally cleared for contact before Tuesday’s practice, and he hit the ground running – literally. On the first play from scrimmage on Tuesday, Watson scored on an inside run. Watson was so enthusiastic about his success, he celebrated with his offensive teammates, which only angered linebacker Gary Johnson. From what I was told, Johnson continuously screamed at Watson “It was only one rep,” and wanted the running back to do it a second time. Clearly, Johnson is definitely a competitor.
The thing that has separated Watson from others in Stan Drayton's room is he operates like a running back with experience. I am told Watson has a great knack of using his patience, agility, and is extremely confident.
- In addition, running back Keaontay Ingram has stood out against this week in practice.
Ingram has great feet, vision, and he actually can create on his own. Ingram can avoid tackles and create something out of nothing whenever breakdowns occur. One person associated with the program believes Ingram could start in week one against Maryland if the running back continues to excel. The three main running backs are Daniel Young, Watson and Ingram (random order). Right now, Watson and Ingram and trending upward.
- All signs continue to point toward Sam Ehlinger starting at quarterback this season. Ehlinger did not turn the ball over during Saturday’s scrimmage. That is important because I was previously told Ehlinger’s ability to limit turnovers during practice would play a major role in determining whether Shane Buechele or Ehlinger would start this season. From what I was told, Ehlinger is throwing the ball away when pressured and not trying to make heroic plays. Overall, Ehlinger has been more accurate during this training camp than he was prior to last season.
- Samuel Cosmi continues to command attention during practice. From what I can tell, Cosmi has a great chance to start at right tackle this year. Check out Alex Dunlap’s report on Wednesday.
- Defensive tackle Chris Nelson has looked like a player who might soften the loss of Poona Ford. From what I was told, Nelson has done a great job of anchoring the line during practice. Nelson’s performance up front keeps the linebackers in space and allows them to make plays.
- Joshua Moore has caught everything thrown toward him this week during practice, while Malcolm Epps is a matchup nightmare. Epps just needs to work on being more consistent.
