Texas coach Tom Herman met with the team prior to his press conference on Sunday, and from what I can tell, he was direct and to the point.
When asked about the emotional carry over and baggage he needs to deal with, Herman said, "I think it was the thing that I led the meeting off with. A lot of you were very close to Charlie and should have been. He's a heck of a man and a heck of a football coach. I told them that some of the things that we'll do in our program will be similar too. But I also told them that the definition of insanity is repeatedly performing the same act, expecting different results, and that we need to change some things. But that certainly doesn't take away from their emotions and their passion for Coach Strong."
- From what I was told, Herman addressed the team differently than what they were used to. He had a serious tone and was focused on communicating his message.
- Herman informed every player they would be called out for mental mistakes. His goal is to build a team that is mentally tough.
- The new coach informed players he is not a fan of marijuana use. If a player fails a drug test, he plans to hold them accountable.
- Herman informed the team that they would have to work extremely hard this offseason. Everybody understands Herman may push them harder than the previous staff.
From what I can tell, there will be a transition period for the current players. However, this coaching transition will be similar to most program changes, and the players are seemingly optimistic they will thrive once they get used to the new staff and system.
