My biggest complaint about Trump's first term was his wasted opportunities. Trump has genius instincts on political strategy and a Presidential presence, charisma and communication ability to be a GREAT President.

But he squandered his first 100 days of his first term unsuccessfully trying to repeal Obamacare. He burned too many bridges in doing so and had to work way too hard to get his tax plan passed.. This led to the Democrats taking the House in 2018 and his Presidency was essentially over with the House investigations and impeachments. A very promising Presidency was wasted those early legislative miscalculations and an overly combative personality.

His four years in exile seem to have given him a better discipline on the campaign trail and a better focus on what a second term will look like. Now, with the bullet missing his skull by a centimeter in a failed assassination attempt he seems to feel the hand of Providence. Can he rise to the level of his greatest self? If so, we could witness a glorious four year term.

TDS is too strong to make the US completely united. But Trump can steal much of the thunder of the opposition by assuming an air of incumbency and carefully laying out a broad plan on how to unite the country. Trump at his best is that good and could do it.

Of course he will have to tone down his rhetoric and avoid the temptation of political retribution. If he wants to reform the DOJ and FBI he needs to do so through his appointments, not by Congressional investigations. Trump needs to set a small list of legislative priorities and stick to them. And Matt Gaetz and Jim Jordan don't get to play investigator until those legislative objectives have been obtained.

Much of what needs to be done on the border can be done without legislation- although passing some laws that would make Biden's lax enforcement of the border difficult to return to might be in order. The economy needs to be first. Decide how to extend his tax cuts while at least narrowing the budget. Lay out a plan for a path to a balanced budget and reduced deficit. ENGAGE Democrats in the process a la teh Simpson Bowles commission and work to bring Democrats along in a bi partisan manner.
