Who and how is disability determined and awarded?

I know a 24 year old ex Marine who was recently awarded full disability for physical injury. This kid is completely healthy and travels the world playing competitive sports now. When I pressed him on this he said there are medical professionals who can be hired who help them through the process and coach them up on what to say and how to game the system. I actually called him out on the spot and told him, “You realize you just told me you are stealing from me and my family don’t you?”. The kid never saw combat, was never deployed to a hot zone and never suffered any serious injury due to his service. Said it’s as easy as saying you have pain and getting a Dr to say it can’t be fully determined what is causing it.

Is what he is saying true? Is it this easy?

My dad did 26 years and (3) tours in Vietnam and he received no disability…I couldn’t believe what this kid told me.
